Metric System I can convert between units in the metric system Sunday, October 18, 2015

Why do scientists use metric units?  Easy to use  Based on the decimal system (each unit is 10 times larger than the next)  Precise/Accurate measurements smaller than an inch so you don’t have to use fractions  No memorization of conversion facts e.g. 1 mile= 5,280 feet  Globally used so no conversion is needed from one country to the next

What are the metric measurements that we are learning about?  Meter Length  Liter Volume: how much space something occupies or takes up  Gram Weight or Mass: measure of the amount of matter in an object….an object’s mass never changes!

How to remember different lengths in the metric system:  When you think of a millimeter (mm) think of: The thickness of a dime.  When you think of a centimeter (cm) think of: The width of your pinky.

Guidelines to using metrics  7 basic units or stair steps  King Henry Died Monday Drinking Chocolate Milk. Kilo K 1000 Hecto H 100 Deka Da 10 Meter, gram, or liter m, g, L 1 Deci D.1 Centi C.01 Milli M.001

How to remember different lengths in the metric system:  When you think of a meter (m) think of: The height of the doorknob.  When you think of a kilometer (km) think of: A little more than half of a mile

How to understand the ruler:  One side has inches (duh!)  The other side is the metric side.  The big numbers represent centimeters  The smaller lines represent millimeters.  How many millimeters are in a centimeter? 10

 With the group you will be put into, use a meter stick to measure the items on your chart.  Be sure to measure in meters, centimeters, and millimeters.

How to remember different volumes in the metric system:  When you think of a liter (L) think of: About the size of a bottle of water.  When you think of 5 milliliters (mL) think of: One teaspoon  When you think of 2 kiloliters (kL) think of: A hot tub

How to remember different masses in the metric system:  When you think of a gram (g) think of: A paper clip  When you think of a kilogram (kg) think of: A little more than 2 pounds.

Measurement Conversions to Know:  1 m = 100 cm  1 cm = 10 mm  1 m = 1,000 mm  1 km = 1,000 m  1 g = 100 cg  1 cg = 10 mg  1 g = 1,000 mg  1 kg = 1,000 g  1 L = 100 cL  1 cL = 10 mL  1 L = 1,000 mL  1 kL = 1,000 mL

What is the order of the metric system?  King Henry Died by Drinking Chocolate Milk King: Kilo Henry: Hecto Died: Deca By: Base (m, L, g) Drinking: Deci Chocolate: Centi Milk: Milli

How to convert within the metric system:  Example 1: to convert 3 meters into decimeters, multiply 3 by 10 one time. 3 m = 3* 10 dm = 30 dm  Example 2: to convert 7 hectoliters into milliliters, multiply 7 by 10 five times. 7 hL = 7 * 10 * 10 * 10 * 10 * 10 mL = 700,000 mL

Now you try:  7 km = __________ m  6 g = __________ cg  9.15 kL = __________ L  6.25 kg = __________ mg  14.2 m = __________ cm

How to convert within the metric system:  Example 3: to convert 6 grams into kilograms, divide 6 by 10 three times. 6 g = 6 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 ÷ 10 kg = 0.006 kg  Example 2: to convert 17 millimeters into centimeters, divide 17 by 10 one time. 17 mm = 17 ÷ 10 cm = 1.7 cm

Now you try:  14 mL = __________ L  3.97 g = __________ kg  915 L = __________ kL  45 mg = __________ dag  10 m = __________ dam

13 kg = ________ g 1234567891011121314151617181920 21222324252627282930 A. 0.013 B. 390 C. 13,000 D. 1,300

240 mL = _______ L 1234567891011121314151617181920 21222324252627282930 A. 240,000 B. 2.4 C. 8 D. 0.24
