3 Perhaps you are curious WHY? Sometimes knowing the reason a sign looks the way it does, helps you remember it. Remember when the first school for the Deaf was established? In 1817 In 1817 — women (or even girls for that matter) did not EVER go out without wearing theirBONNETS!

6 Tip his hat to her. So the sign for MALE is a variation of a man tipping his hat to greet a female in public.

11 Sentence Structure: The basic sentence structure used in simple sentences in ASL, commonly have a repeated pronoun at the end. B. SHE STUDENT SHE.‘She is a student.’ C. MY MOTHER SHE. ‘She is my mother.’

12 Follow the examples given, changing them to use the repeated pronoun: SHE MY SISTER SHE HE MY BROTHER HE HE YOUR FATHER HE HE OUR FATHER HE SHE MY GRANDMOTHER SHE HE MY FRIEND HE HE YOUR GRANDFATHER HE SHE YOUR TEACHER SHE SHE MY STUDENT SHE HE MY FRIEND HE HE BOY HE SHE GIRL SHE HE MAN HE SHE WOMAN SHE Change the following sentences ~ by adding a repeated pronoun at the end of each sentence. Practice these sentences as well. Be ready to sign them for the class.

13 Another common form… …of sentences used in ASL is the use of Third Person Pronouns: When pronouns are used in a sentence to refer to use the space around you. When pronouns are used in a sentence to refer to _______________________ use the space around you. If the persons are not present, the signer can refer to one person on one side and the other on the opposite side.

14 CHANGE the following examples. Add a 1 st & 3 rd person pronoun to form a new sentence. (Remember to separate – by using space around you.) SHE IS HER SISTER. SHE IS THEIR TEACHER. SHE IS HER MOTHER. SHE IS HER FRIEND. SHE IS HIS GRANDMOTHER. SHE IS HIS STUDENT. HE IS HIS FATHER. HE IS HER BROTHER. SHE IS HIS SISTER. HE IS HER GRANDFATHER. Change the following sentences ~ by using a third person pronoun and space. Practice all ten sentences. Be ready to sign them for the class. Change each using pronouns as shown:

15 ACTIVITY : Sit in a group of 4, facing your partner across from you as shown. PartnersPartners You will only sign to your partner sitting across from you. Try to NOT look at or sign to the people on either side of you. But you WILL be talking about them… ALL SET?

23 You will sign the sentences for your partner to write in English. Decide who will be ‘A’ and who will be ‘B’. Partner for today:

24 Signer ‘B’ will write and sits with back to the screen and has paper and pen or pencil. Signer ‘A’ will sign each sentence for their partner. YOU NEED TO WATCH ME- I will model EACH sentence for you as you go along!
