2 Why is it called the Golden Age? The Great War had just ended. Radios were in almost every home. Shorter work days = More free time.

3 Baseball First Negro leagues were started. Jackie Robinson was the first Negro player to play in MLB. Babe Ruth became the most popular baseball player, hitting the home run record in 1927. Baseball became know as “America’s Sport” or as we know it today “America’s Favorite Pastime”

4 Football September 17, 1920 first organized league was established. NFL was established shortly after, consisted of 18 teams. Chicago Bears player, Red Grange, was the most popular at the time, and still considered one of the best ever.

5 Boxing In 1920, New York passed Walker Law, this legalized boxing. Other states witnessed this and then began to legalize boxing. Jack Dempsey was the most popular boxer at this time, he fought in the first million dollar fight and first two and half million dollar fight.

6 Other Notables Tennis- William “Big Bill” Tilden, and Helen Wills Golf- Bobby Jones, Walter Hagen, Gene Sarozen Johnny Weissmuller- first person to swim 100m in under a minute (58.6 seconds) Gertrude Ederle- first woman to swim across English Channel
