Agenda FMCSA systems Systems Overview SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools MCMIS Data Quality Tools A&I Online Data Quality Tools DataQs

FMCSA Systems SAFETYNET – Used by State and Federal offices to collect, manage, and transfer roadside inspection and crash data to the FMCSA Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) – FMCSA repository for motor carrier registration, roadside inspection, crash, compliance review, and other motor carrier enforcement information Analysis and Information (A&I) Online – Web based tool designed to provide access to descriptive statistics and analyses regarding commercial vehicle, driver, and carrier safety information. DataQs – Electronic means for filing concerns about Federal and State data released by the FMCSA

Systems Overview Roadside Inspection & Crash Data Motor Carrier Registration Information SAFETYNET (Alabama) SAFETYNET (Alaska) SAFETYNET (Wyoming).... Data Collection Motor Carrier Management Information System (MCMIS) Data Repository Analysis & Information (A&I) Online Monthly Snapshots of MCMIS Data Dissemination DataQs – Web Based Data Correction System Data Correction Requests To State MCSAP Offices Data Correction

SAFETYNET Match Process Matches crash and inspection records to motor carriers – Batch mode: runs against groups of crash or inspection records at a single time – Interactive mode: runs against the currently viewed crash or inspection record SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools

SAFETYNET Match Process: Batch mode SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools } Potential matches

SAFETYNET Match Process: Interactive mode SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools Carrier search on current inspection record

SAFETYNET Reports Data Entry Reports – Data Entry Verification Report – Data Entry Status Report – Data Entry Workload Report – Duplicate Inspection Numbers Upload Status Reports – Upload Summary Report – Upload Timeline Report MCMIS Upload Edit Result Messages (crash only) SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools

Data Entry Reports:

SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools Upload Status Reports:

SAFETYNET Query Tool Record (menu) -> Query Uses SAFETYNET’s built in Query by Example builder. Used for selecting distinct groups of records. Queries can be built using multiple fields and multiple conditions. Example: Display all crashes that occurred between 01/01/2006 and 07/31/2006 with fatalities Reports can be generated based on query results SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools

Example: Display all crashes that occurred between 01/01/2006 and 07/31/2006 with fatalities SAFETYNET Query Tool: SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools

SAFETYNET Activity Logs System (menu) -> Activity Logs Provides a summary of records imported, prepared, and confirmation file processing – Identifies fatal errors and warnings – Identifies specific records with issues Includes summary report at the end of the activity SAFETYNET Data Quality Tools

MCMIS Reports: Management Reports (Monthly basis) – Summary of Non-Matched Inspections – Timeliness of Inspection Uploads – Summary of Non-Matched Crashes – Timeliness of Crash Uploads Real Time Reports (Requested by user) – Timeliness of Inspection Uploads by Safety Inspector – Non-match Crash & Inspection Records – Duplicate Crash & Inspection records MCMIS Data Quality Tools

A&I Data Quality Module Evaluation State Safety Data Quality (SSDQ) – Evaluation of the completeness, timeliness, accuracy, and consistency of State reported data to MCMIS – Results are updated quarterly – Available to the General Public Data and Reports – Access to data and reports that can be used to analyze data quality issues and to monitor trends in reporting Link to University of Michigan Transportation Research Institute (UMTRI) Reports on Truck and Bus data quality Quarterly snapshot of MCMIS and FARS data available for download in EXCEL format (password protected)

A&I Data Quality Module Evaluation

Monitoring Monthly Progress Report (MPR) – Monthly SSDQ evaluation results to Federal and State enforcement agencies – Historical SSDQ evaluation results (for the previous 12 months) to enable users to track their data quality improvements – Supplemental Reports with additional information on the quality of State-reported data in MCMIS and DataQs summary statistics A&I Data Quality Module

Monitoring A&I Data Quality Module

Improvement: Police Accident Reporting (PAR) – Web-based educational resource for law enforcement officers, CMV inspection authorities, accident investigation trainers, and State Department of Transportation accident record developers and users. – Five lessons that define and provide examples of FMCSA related crash data collected and reported to SAFETYNET. A&I Data Quality Module

Improvement: A&I Data Quality Module

What is DataQs? Electronic means for filing concerns about Federal and State data released by the FMCSA Allows motor carriers to submit data quality challenges related to motor carrier safety data Routes the challenges to the appropriate organization for resolution based on the type of challenge http://dataqs.fmcsa.dot.gov

DataQs On-line reports provide summaries of data challenges received by MCSAP Agencies. DataQs Features
