Alternative Dissemination: how should we share our research? Dr Sandy O’Sullivan

Creative Alternative Dissemination Non-creative alternative dissemination Standard Dissemination Assumes existing skill level in the field of practice Assumes skill level to accomplish research work and dissemination in researchers or across the team. Assumes existing understanding of the field and skill level in dissemination Review of the field and/or research into the topic. A proposal is developed including info on dissemination Research into the topic, a proposal for research approach and dissemination is articulated. Preliminary research into the topic. A proposal is developed including info on dissemination Creative work is developed, using practice-based or practice-led processes (or a combination of both). Research work appropriate to the dissemination form is developed; rigourous processes are expected. Literature review, ethics application, research is undertaken (including any field research) Articulation document is prepared 300-400 words (ERA), explaining how it constitutes research. Research is submitted for publication in peer-assessed book chapter, journal article, review, book or conf proceedings. Exhibition, Performance, Dissemination Dictionaries, Alternative forms of publication (DVD, Online,, Public Presentation, citable written material). Peer review is undertaken. Reviews or, responses are possible, may determine research status Accept or reject. Alternative/Standard Dissemination in Research

How this constitutes ‘new knowledge’ in both research training and research work To replace the idea of a new knowledge contribution, Nelson describes ‘…a cultural contribution of substantial significance’. Nelson, R. Doctoralness in the balance: the agonies of scholarly writing in studio research degrees. Text Special Issue No. 3. April 2004.

LANGUAGE AND LINGUISTICS …some other disciplines that can argue alternative forms will support better research outcomes. For example, dictionaries, above 4000 words, have been included thanks to lobbying by linguists, however datasets that may have elements of analysis, are a legitimate research output, are cited, and require no further contextualization continue to be challenged as a destination research output (Musgrave and Hajek, 2011) (O’Sullivan 2013) O’Sullivan, S. Avoiding the zero-sum game: an Indigenous Australian project-based perspective on creativity and research dissemination. International Journal of Creativity, Issue 2, May 2013.

Research training, not just credentialing Honesty and working with irony: planning the Long Career Realistic plans and training in expectations in the academy Portfolio development for early career researchers Dissemination appropriate to research, appropriate to career plan Peer-assessed journals and writing practice – risks? Research-Invested Academics Why alternatively disseminate? What is discipline-appropriate dissemination? Excellence Research Framework (ERF) and the Arts & Humanities Research Council Excellence in Research for Australia, FoR codes – what counts? Alternative research in creative contexts (19 code – Creative Arts ) Alternative research in other areas (20 and 13 – Language, Comms and Culture and Ed) Creative collaboration – what is assessed, who assesses? Australian Research Council – issues around career best publications Supervisors understanding opportunities for research students in their field
