Our identified group… Hwa Chong Sporting Athletics Sporting HCI boys leads “active” lifestyles Sedentary – mundane activity associating with day-to-day life Slightly active - physical activity equal to walking between 1.5 and 3 miles per day Active - physical activity equal to walking more than 3 miles per day

Our identified group overall needs to have around 2800-3200 calories intake a day. Amount of calories active boys need…

Our Identified Stall… Stall 6: Western Food Meal: Pork Chop Contains : 150g of pork chop A 35g chicken hot dog 3 slices of cucumber One bowl of tomato rice

Conversion to calories 150g of pork chop 35g chicken hot dog 3 slices of cucumber One bowl of tomato rice 80 calories 390 calories 1 calorie 235 calories

Pork Chop meal usually taken as lunch by HCI atheletes. Our identified group need 2800 – 3200 calories per day Let’s take the minimum of 2800 calories they need to maintain a healthy and balanced diet. Assuming that they take 3 meals (Breakfast, Lunch, Dinner) everyday, the essential nutritional value they need for each meal is therefore 2800/3 = 934 calories Evaluation on whether it provides adequate nutrition

In addition… There’s a lack of fruits and vegetables section which is the second most important from the food pyramid. With only 3 miserable (  ) slices of decorative cucumber and some pieces of tomato in the rice, which are too small in amounts, hence the current meal is unbalanced.

Have a variety of food –meals on starchy foods and eating at least five portions of fruit and vegetables a day Healthy Diet… Consists of: Rice from “rice and alternatives” section in the food pyramid Rice from “rice and alternatives” section in the food pyramid Little proportion of cucumber and tomato from the “fruits and vegetables” Little proportion of cucumber and tomato from the “fruits and vegetables” Pork chop and chicken hot dog from the “meat and alternatives categories” Pork chop and chicken hot dog from the “meat and alternatives categories” Low amount of food from “vegetables and food” categories in the current meal

Therefore we propose… Addition of 150g of coleslaw Which is a salad consisting mayonnaise and cabbage Coleslaw: - Healthy food consisting mainly of cabbage -increases percentage of “fruits and vegetables” content -opens up one’s appetite - 150 grams of coleslaw consists of approximately 237 calories

Modified meal now amounts to 943 calories, more than enough to supply an active Hwa Chong boy of his nutritional needs Modified meal now amounts to 943 calories, more than enough to supply an active Hwa Chong boy of his nutritional needs “Fats, oil, salts and sugar” section on the topmost of the health pyramid “Fats, oil, salts and sugar” section on the topmost of the health pyramid –not chosen to be implemented –unhealthy –cannot be taken too much or in excess. Calories158Carbohydrate5.2 Protein2.2 Fat14.3 Fibre1.6 Alcohol0.0 Amount of calories in 100g Coleslaw Adding Coleslaw…

–According food pyramid, adding more vegetables into the meal = more beneficial –Active students = enough nutrition to last through the day –promote good balance between meat and vegetables –More calories! Modified meal stands an edge over current meal bringing about much benefits Modified meal stands an edge over current meal bringing about much benefits –physically active students to have enough nutrition to last through the day upon consumption Comparing… Meal of 943 calories VS current meal of 706 calories

Cost effective… As we have found out, 1kg of cabbage is about $1.50. Therefore, each serving of 150g is about $.0.20. One to two spoons of mayonnaise is $0.20 too. With a base cost of $1.50 for 150g of pork chop, $0.20 for sausage and adding the coleslaw, it would add up to about $2.10 per serving. The stall vendor can still profit from selling the pork chop at $2.80 with a $0.70 profit in the end.
