THE STORY The Obedient Master

THE STORY Who is Jesus? Above all, he is the savior, but what does that mean? How does Jesus become Savior? Should we view him as powerful lord or suffering servant? Can he be both? What does that mean?

MATTHEW’S KING CH. 1: Immanuel, Son of David CH. 3: Son of God CH. 5-7: Authoritative Teacher CH. 11: The One, God’s Chosen Servant CH. 14: Lord of Storms and Giver of Blessings CH. 17: Greater Than Moses and Elijah CH. 21: King of Zion CH. 28: All Authority in Heaven and on Earth

MAN OF SORROW Matthew 26:36-38 He began to be sorrowful … “My soul is overwhelmed with sorrow to the point of death” “and began to be sore amazed, and to be very heavy” (Mark 14:33, KJV) Jesus is experiencing ever ounce of the human dread of death and suffering.

THE CUP In the prophets, the cup is full of God’s wrath. Jeremiah 25:15, 28 Thus the LORD, the God of Israel, said to me: “Take from my hand this cup of the wine of wrath, and make all the nations to whom I send you drink it. … And if they refuse to accept the cup from your hand to drink, then you shall say to them, ‘Thus says the LORD of hosts: You must drink!’”

THE CUP Matthew 26:39 “My Father, if it be possible, let this cup pass from me; nevertheless, not as I will, but as you will.” He dreads the cup and still freely chooses it. Luke 22:44 And being in an agony (agonia) he prayed more earnestly; and his sweat became like great drops of blood falling down to the ground. Read Jonathon Edwards: “view of the furnace”

ABOUT THE TREE George Herbert’s poem: “O all ye who pass by, behold and see / Man stole the fruit, but I must climb the tree” Adam was warned about the tree, but disobeyed. Jesus was warned about the tree, and obeyed. Keller: “Jesus is the first and last person in history to be told that obedience would bring a curse. … And yet Jesus obeyed.”

LESSONS LEARNED See his INTEGRITY: Doing what is right when no one can see. See his PRAYER: Brutal honesty and complete obedience. See his PATIENCE: The apostle’s sleep, but he credits their intention: “The spirit is willing, but the flesh is weak” (Matthew 26:41).

THY WILL BE DONE C.S. Lewis: If in this life you never say to God, “Thy will be done,” then eventually God will say to you for the life to come, “All right, then THY will be done.” Jesus is savior because only obedience to the God of Heaven can put the people of earth back to right.
