January 24 th, 2008 – Do Now Explain the following quote in your own words: “I had reasoned this out in my mind, there was one of two things I had a right to, liberty or death; if I could not have one, I would have the other.” – Harriet Tubman

Harriet Tubman Born: 1820 into slavery on a plantation in Maryland. Died 1913 When her owner died she found out that her brothers were being sold to a Georgia plantation owner. This was her motivation to escape slavery. Notoriously, known as one of the most successful Underground Railroad “conductors”.

Underground Railroad In the 1840’s, railroads were the fastest ways to travel. When the slaves in the south started to disappear it seemed to some like there was an underground railroad operating. Underground Lingo Passengers – escaped slaves Stations – houses and barns where slaves were hidden Conductors – took the passengers from station to station; guides

Role in the Anti-Slavery Movement After escaping slavery herself, Tubman traveled from the north to the south nineteen times and helped about three hundred slaves reach their freedom. Tubman never lost a passenger during their escape. A $40,000 reward was offered for her capture; Tubman was never caught.

Tubman & Underground Railroad in New Jersey In New Jersey there are several inns and churches which were used as stops in the Underground Railroad. Concealed Indian trails throughout Cumberland and Cape May counties were also used by the runaways. Locally, Tubman spent her summers as a hotel worker in Cape May. She used this money to help guide slaves to freedom. Picture: Cranbury Inn near New Brunswick. This was an ideal stop on the Underground Railroad because people were coming and going all times of the day and night.

Discussion Questions? Explain how Tubman played a role in the anti-slavery movement. Pretend you are the owner of a small farm in New Jersey. One day you were approached by Harriet Tubman; she wants to use your barn for a “station” on the Underground Railroad. How would you respond to her proposal?

Exit Slip On your index card fill in the following in relation to Harriet Tubman and the anti- slavery movement: I used to think that _____________________, But now I know that ____________________.
