2 Verbals What is a VERBAL?? ▫A verbal is a word that is formed from a verb, but it is used in a sentence as a  Noun  Adjective  Or, an Adverb.

3 There are three kinds of VERBALS: 1. Gerunds 2. Infinitives 3. Participles

4 1) The GERUND  A verb form that can be used as a NOUN  Examples:  Jogging can be good exercise.  My favorite hobby is fishing.  Lock the door before leaving.  Did they go hiking?

5 Practice Finding Gerunds: 1.Their singing caused the dog to howl. 2.Jerry has been practicing pole vaulting every day after school. 3.My sister has always enjoyed horseback riding. 4.In the past, working took up most people’s time six days a week. 5.I look forward to resting after this tiring job is done.

6 2) The INFINITIVE  A verb form that can be used as a  Noun ▫Example: To forgive does not always mean to forget. ▫[To forgive is the subject of the sentence.]  an Adjective ▫If you want information about computers, that is the magazine to read. ▫[To read modifies magazine.]  Or an Adverb ▫The caravan stopped at the oasis to rest. [To rest modifies the verb stopped.]

7 Practice Finding Infinitives: 1.I like to walk home. 2.We usually go to my house or her house to listen to music. 3.One day I asked Jennie to join us. 4.I did not know which dance steps to start with. 5.I tried to teach her how to dance, but I gave up.

8 3) The PARTICIPLE A verb form that can be used as an adjective ▫Present Participles end in –ing  Example:  The trotting horses ran past the crowd. ▫Past Participles end in –ed, -d, or -t.  Example:  The pirates hid their buried treasure.

9 Practice finding Participles: 1.The sparkling water splashed in our faces. 2.The aged and yellowed papers are kept in a file. 3.The charging bull thundered across the field. 4.The fidgeting children could not wait for the party to start. 5.Watching its image in the mirror closely, the bird became distressed.

11 Practice Finding Gerund Phrases: 1.Vincent’s pleading did not influence his mother’s decision. 2.We sat back and enjoyed the slow rocking of the boat. 3.Shouting at people does not make them understand you better. 4.She is considering running for class president. 5.Give practicing the piano a chance.
