2 An individual who buys products or services for personal use and not for manufacture or resale. A consumer is someone who can make the decision whether or not to purchase an item at the store or online, and someone who can be influenced by marketing and advertisements.

3 You receive a call from someone who says they are with the computer support department at Microsoft Corporation. They ask you to go turn on your computer so that they can help to identify a threat to your system. What would a “smart” consumer do?

4 You are shopping for groceries and see a yellow sale sign under dish detergent that says “buy one and get one free”. When you arrive at the check out you get charged for two bottles of dish detergent. What would a “smart” consumer do?

5 A stranger knocks on your door and says they are collecting money for a charity however you are not familiar with the charity they claim to represent. What would a “smart” consumer do?

6 A grocery store has advertised your favourite ice cream, normally $6.99 a carton, on sale this week for $2.99. When you arrive, the shelf is empty and a staff member tells you that they have all been sold. What would a “smart” consumer do?

7 You receive an envelope and inside is a card that says your household has won a trip on a luxury cruise line. You are asked to complete a form containing personal information “so we can learn more about you” and return in the envelop provided. What would a “smart” consumer do?
