2 Page 2 LAITS Laboratory for Advanced Information Technology and Standards What is ISO 19115? Title: Geographic Information – Metadata Scope: “Identifies the metadata required to describe digital geographic data. Metadata is applicable to independent datasets, aggregations of datasets, individual geographic features, and the various classes of objects that compose a feature. Metadata shall be provided for geographic datasets and may, optionally, be provided for aggregations of datasets, features, and attributes of features.” Status: ISO standard published May 2003 Purchase at: http://www.iso.orghttp://www.iso.org

Introduction References Terms (not defined elsewhere in the ISO 191** series) UML models – including codelists Core metadata list Data Dictionary Descriptions of extensions and profiles Abstract test suite Dataset Metadata application profile Extension methodology (informative only) Metadata implementation (informative only) Hierarchical levels of metadata (informative only) Implementation examples (informative only) Multilingual support for free text metadata elements (informative only)

6 Page 6 LAITS Laboratory for Advanced Information Technology and Standards What is ISO 19115 Part 2? Title: Geographic Information - Metadata - Part2: Extensions for imagery and gridded data Scope: This International Standard extends ISO 19115:2003 Geographic Information – Metadata by defining the schema and additional metadata required for imagery and gridded data Status: Working Draft 2 (released Sept 03 – Project Team lead by US (John Eller, NGA) –Presently in requirements collection process Collecting comments from Subject Matter Experts (SME’s) Coordinating with ISO 19130 (harmonizing models/concepts) NO more WD will be issued before the stabilization of 19130. Original Schedule: Committee Draft (CD) 8/04, Draft International Standard (DIS) 9/05, Final DIS (FDIS) 5/06, International Standard (IS) 8/06 The schedule is likely to be delayed by about 6 months.

10 Page 10 LAITS Laboratory for Advanced Information Technology and Standards Harmonization with ISO 19130 ISO 19130 defines the sensor models and data models for georeferenceable imagery data. –Georefeenceable imagery data: Not georectified yet but enough geolocation information is presented so that georectification is possible. –ISO 19130 defines the metadata for describing the geolocation of imagery and Gridded data Sensor model/platform information Functional fitting Ground Control Points (GCPs) Major efforts have been taken place to harmonize between 19115-2 & 19130 –Link 19130 to 19115-2. –Solve repeating/conflict definition of metadata.
