Key engineering project of State Planning Commission ( 1986-1995 ) Key project of Chinese Academy of Sciences ( 1986-1990 ) Major project of network application of Natural Science Foundation of China ( 1995-1996 ) Basic research special support project of Chinese Academy of Sciences ( 1991-2000 ) Background -- SDB

The largest Scientific Database in China Multi-discipline database, covering: Information, Computer, Network, Chemistry, Biology, Astronomy, Material, Corrosion, Optics and fine mechanics, Natural resources, Energy, Eco-environment, Limnology, Marsh, Glaciology, Atmosphere, Ancient climate, Zoology, Hydro-biology, Remote sensing, etc. Background -- SDB

Long R&D period – From 1986 to the present A large number of people involved – 22 units including CNIC – 500+ people worked for SDB in the past – 200+ researchers now still at posts Background -- SDB

Awards – SDB was awarded the First Prize for S&T Progress of CAS in 1997 and the Second Prize for National S&T Progress in 1998. – Those sub-databases won lots of awards individually. Background -- SDB

Data resources (by Dec. 2000) – 180 specialized databases – Total volume: 725GB – 19 web sites on CSTNET – 153 on-line databases, 327GB
