Presentation to Faculty Board Valerie Cooper

Background §Students need to practice skill of movement analysis §No feedback available as each movement differs §A real model tires §Repeated video clips provide consistency and a model for feedback

The Study Objectives §To develop a package for students to practice movement analysis. §To integrate the package into the related modules. §To evaluate the package and its use with the different groups of students using the package.

Integration §The students were introduced to the package early in their modules by the staff teaching that module § They were given time on their own to use the package as an adjunct to their other means of instruction in the subject. §It was thought that this would be how the package would be used in the future and therefore the evaluation would relate to the real learning environment in which the package was designed to be used.

The Study Objectives §To develop a package for students to practice movement analysis. §To integrate the package into the related modules. §To evaluate the package and its use with the different groups of students using the package.

Evaluation Questionnaire given to 3 groups of students; BSc Hons OT(n=25), BSc Hons PT(n=20) and MSc PT (n=16) all first year. Focus groups with BSc Hons PT and MSc PT. BSc Hons OT were on clinical placement. This questionnaire is now being completed by the next cohort of students

Movement Analysis Package

Students Overall attitudes towards the Package Positive attitudes to all aspects but the following features were most valued; §Fits with course material. §Helps you learn about the topic. §Helps you to revise the subject. §Presentation is informative.

Group Differences in Attitudes to the Package; little difference between groups.

Strengths §Facilitates learning through application of knowledge §Relates to other course material and pulls theory together §Video clips allow practice on own §Glossary provides support. §Feedback highlights areas for further study Areas for Development §Old and slow computers affect running. §Lack of out access outside university §Greater depth of feedback / explanation §repeated attempts before feedback §Introduce package later and reminders to use it

Themes Emerging from focus groups MSc PT §Computers too few and too slow §Generally worthwhile but would like links to pathologies and treatments BSc Hons PT §Want access from home §More and faster computers §generally positive towards package but want more guidance on how and when to use it

New Developments §New site and computers have allowed access through the iNet §Link to an on-line discussion group. § Integration into modules by directing self study. § Extended videos for the forearm. §Sports videos and trunk movements in development.

Future Developments §Use of community group for further evaluation and ideas for development. §Use of package in summative assessment. §Pathology materials relating to patient videos. §Stroke patient package in development stages. §Use of VICON to provide more detailed information for analysis.
