Design in the Round A Color Theory Mandala Instructor: Mrs. Champion

The Problem  Create a mandala that uses a repeated radial pattern that demonstrates the organization of the color wheel.  The mandala must have:  12 equal parts  The organization of color hues of the color wheel.  Use color attributes such as hue, saturation, intensity, value, tint, shade and complement.  A simple design that when repeated becomes aesthetically pleasing and more complex.  Your choice board media are tempera paint, and watercolor.

What are mandalas and what are they used for? Who throughout history has used them? Who still uses them today? What is hue? What is saturation? What is value? What is intesity? What is tint and shade? What are complementary colors? Research

Idea Generation Create a circle with a compass or other object. Divide into 12 equal sections. Invent a design that can fit in 1/12 of a circle. Transfer it by reflection and rotation to make the overall patterns.

Idea Generation Choose an appropriate place on each section to divide it into 3 different areas. (concentric circles) One for hue, one for tint, one for shade. Each section will have an area for hue, tint, shade, and the color’s complement.

Test Sketch out sections and test out ideas. Record what worked and what didn’t.

Final Solution Using the media of choice, mix all the colors where appropriate and apply the paint correctly as demonstrated by your teacher.

Evaluation/Reflection Evaluate the design process by examining your steps. Did you use them correctly? Self Evaluation and ERQ? Present/Share out? Display?
