2 The students will summarize the crises that developed over Cuba by creating a time line of events that led to the Cuban Missile Crisis Announcement: Chapter 18/19/20 Test May 6- tentatively Hand In: Chapter 19 Vocabulary Drill: Analyze the Life magazine cover on page 673 and answer the following: 1. Do you think the Bay of Pigs invasion was a success or a failure? What words on the magazine cover helped you draw that conclusion? 2. Whom do the writers seem to credit or blame for the outcome of the invasion? Motivation: What would happen in a nuclear war? Can anyone win such a war? Which countries pose the greatest threat of nuclear war?

5 Cuban Missile Crisis-October 1962 U.S.S.R. began secretly installing nuclear-tipped missiles in Cuba JFK refused bombing strikes October 22, 1962-naval quarantine of Cuba an attack from Cuba would be an attack from Russia with a nuclear response U.S. agreed to not invade Cuba U.S. removed missiles from Turkey U.S.S.R. pulled missiles from Cuba Outcomes: Khrushchev out Soviets began massive military buildup Democrats did better in the 1962 mid-terms Prohibiting trial nuclear explosions in the atmosphere signed in late 1963 installment of a Moscow-Washington hotline in August 1963

Using the map on page 674, about how long would it take for a missile launched from Cuba to reach New York? 5. What led East Germany to build the Berlin Wall? What were the effects of the wall?
