Before Beginning: Find Support! Have quotations prepared before you begin writing. Have at least one quotation to support each of your prongs/points

3 Prong Thesis The power of young love that William Shakespeare wrote about in Romeo and Juliet endures today and is seen in characters in contemporary movies such as The Notebook, Sixteen Candles, and My Girl.

Quotation to support 1 st prong: The Notebook In The Notebook, Young Noah and Young Allie have a conversation about Noah moving to New York. When Noah asks, “What am I gonna do in New York,” Allie replies, “Be with me.”

Frame Step 1: An Introductory Sentence Prepares the reader of the context of the quote Similar to an introduction paragraph Gives the reader a warning that he/she will be reading a quotation

Example: Intro Sentence Contemporary blockbuster movies often have young love as the central plot of the film.

Frame Step 2: Insert the Quotation EXAMPLES - “Put your quotation here” (LaMontagne 57). Short Quotes = 1-3 lines –Use “quotation marks” –Include citation: (author page #), with a period after the second parenthesis –Include the quote within a sentence if needed -Emerson once said, “Envy is ignorance … imitation is suicide” (Emerson 23).

Block Quotes = 4 or more lines –Indent the entire quotation 2 tabs –No quotation marks needed –Period comes before the ( ) EXAMPLE If you are quoting a lot of text, Use the block quotation format. This signals to the reader that a large portion of the passage is another’s words. The indentation helps it to stand out. (LaMontagne 57) Continue with rewording of quotation, starting at the left margin.

Example: Inserting the Quotation “In The Notebook, Young Noah and Young Allie have a conversation about Noah moving to New York. When Noah asks, “What am I gonna do in New York,” Allie replies, “Be with me” (Myers 12). Contemporary blockbuster movies often have young love as the central plot of the film.

Frame Step 3: Rewording the Quotation To show you know what the quotation means, you need to restate the quotation in your own words after using it.

Example: Rewording Quotation Contemporary blockbuster movies often have young love as the central plot of the film. “ In The Notebook, Young Noah and Young Allie have a conversation about Noah moving to New York. When Noah asks, “What am I gonna do in New York,” Allie replies, “Be with me” (Myers 12). The love between these two young characters is seen when Allie replies that she just wants to be close to and share her life with Noah.

Frame Step 4: Justifying the Quotation Answers the question… Why did you decide to use this quotation to support your thesis? Relate the quotation back to your thesis.

3 Prong Thesis The power of young love that William Shakespeare wrote about in Romeo and Juliet endures today and is seen in characters in contemporary movies such as The Notebook, Sixteen Candles, and My Girl.
