Cycle of Matter and Energy Transfer in an Ecosystem 1.Review: Organisms need Resources…what do resources PROVIDE? 2.What is Matter and where does it come from? 3.How does is Matter pass through Organisms?

Question 1: What are Resouces? What are they made of?

1. Review: Organisms need Resources…what do resources PROVIDE? What are the biotic and abiotic factors in this picture? Biotic Factors: Living Organisms (Elk, grass, trees, fish, insects) Abiotic (water, air, soil) It’s all made of Matter! Organisms NEED Matter The Environment PROVIDES Matter, and in turn, Energy Basic forms of Matter: Water (H20), Carbon Dioxide (CO2), Oxygen (O), Nitrogen (N) THE ANSWER: resources provide matter and energy

Question 2: Which organisms are PROVIDING energy in this diagram? Circle them. Draw arrows to show how matter and energy can flow through multiple organisms.

2. What is Matter and where does it come from? In an ecosystem, matter includes CO2, O, N, H20 and more! Matter is made of atoms. It is always coming from and going through many organisms These organisms are called: PRODUCERS CONSUMERS DECOMPOSERS

Question 3: Does Matter ever “go away” or “disappear”? Explain

3. How does is Matter move through Organisms? We can easily observe the movement of matter and energy through organisms with the help of a food web: A. If we look at this web, the grasses and flowers (producers) are absorbing CO2 from the air and N from the soil (movement of matter). **They could: 1) Die and decompose in the soil (movement of matter and energy, OR, 2) be consumed (passing matter and energy) B. In the same way, the Hare, Lemming, Wolf (consumers) are involved in the movement of matter. **They could: 1) Inhale O and exhale CO2 to be absorbed by plants (movement of matter) 2) Consume a plant or smaller consumer (movement of matter) 3) Die and decompose (movement of matter)

Question 4: Draw your own movement of matter through a PRODUCER, CONSUMER, and DECOMPOSER. Label the type of matter that is being moved or cycled.

Question 5: Complete this food web. Draw lines to indicate movement of matter and energy from producer to consumer to decomposer

Conclusion: 1.Food webs show how matter and energy are transferred through organisms called: 1.Can matter and energy only transfer through on level of the food web? Why or why not? 2.Do the atoms that make up organisms just go away when the organism dies? Explain.

HOMEWORK: Put your note guide into your take home folder and re- read it tonight THEN, write a short summary on what you know based on the notes (you can list terms as well) Option: if writing is not your strong point, you can create a diagram or chart, but it should convey the same amount of information as declared by the rubric: Rubric: 1 paragraph= ✓ 2 paragraphs= ✓ + 3 paragraphs=+
