3 Box and Whisker Plots GPS. M7D1 Students will pose questions, collect data, represent and analyze the data, and interpret results. Analyze data with respect to measures of variation (range, quartiles, interquartile range)

4 EQ:  How is understanding the measures of central tendency important in constructing a box and whisker plot?  How do we construct a Box and Whisker Plot?  How does a Box and Whisker Plot show variation?

5 Five Key Points  Students will trace their hand on a sheet of printer paper.  Label each finger, in order, as one of the five key values.  Lower Extreme  (First) Lower Quartile  Median  (Third) Upper Quartile  Upper Extreme

6 Five Key Points  Using the following data, find the Five Key Points  Then, Label them on your hand drawing  Use colored pencils or crayons to color code your drawing and your math.

7 Step 1 – Order Numbers 1. Order the set of numbers from least to greatest

8 2. Find the median. The median is the middle number. If the data has two middle numbers, find the mean of the two numbers. What is the median? Step 2 – Find the Median

9 3. Find the lower and upper medians or quartiles. These are the middle numbers on each side of the median. What are they? Step 3 – Upper & Lower Quartiles

10 4. Find the least number is the lower extreme. The greatest number is the upper extreme. Step 4 – Upper & Lower Extremes

11 Lower extreme- Smallest # First quartile is the median of the lower half of the data set Second quartile- the median of the data set Third quartile is the median of the upper half of the data set Upper extreme- the biggest # HERE IS AN EXAMPLE OF 5 KEY POINTS ON A BOX AND WHISKER PLOT

13 Box And Whisker Plot Brochure On the front of your brochure, take two minutes and draw a picture or cartoon that represents MEDIAN.

15 Definitions:  Box and whisker: shows the distribution of a set of data along a number line by dividing the data into four parts  Median: (middle quartile) the middle number in a set of data ordered least to greatest  Lower Extreme: smallest number in a data set.  Upper Extreme: largest number in a data set

16  Lower Quartile: median of the lower half  Upper Quartile: median of the upper half  Range: the difference between the highest and lowest numbers  Interquartile Range: the difference between the upper and lower quartiles.

26 Verse 1 So, sit right back and I’ll tell a tale. A tale of a guy named Scott. He figured out how to draw a Box and Whisker plot Repeat (A box and whisker plot)

27 Verse 2 He said, “Take your pencil and write the numbers In order from least to great.” Then find the number in the middle and draw a line through it. Repeat: Yes, draw a line through it. 10 19 25 28 29 29 30 32 32 34 34 35 36 40 45 55 58 72 Median: 33

28 Verse 3 This number is called the median It splits the data in half. We call the left the lower half And the right the upper half. Repeat: The right is the upper half. 10 19 25 28 29 29 30 32 32 34 34 35 36 40 45 55 58 72 Median: 33

29 Verse 4 Now, concentrate on the lower half. It takes a little while. Find the median of this half. It’s called the lower quartile. Repeat: (It’s called the lower quartile)

30 Verse 5 Now, switch your attention to the other half. And do it with a smile! Now find the median of this half, It’s called the Upper Quartile. Repeat: (It’s called the Upper Quartile)

31 Verse 6 This is so exciting now. Because we’re almost done. We need to write four numbers in a row On a number line. Repeat: (on a number line)

32 Verse 7 Start by plotting the two quartiles with the median in between Then draw a box around the three With the median in between. Repeat (With the median in between)

33 Verse 8 So, something that will make you feel Like you’re really smart. Is if you can remember that The box is 50 percent. Repeat (The box is 50 percent)

34 Verse 9 Hey, did you forget the important whisker part? My teacher said, “ That’s a sin!” You have to draw a line from the box A line that goes to the max and min Repeat: (A line that goes to the max and min)

35 Verse 10 Next, we need to remember that The data on each whisker part Makes 25 percent of the plot And now we’re truly smart. Repeat (Yes, now we’re truly smart)

36 Verse 11 So, that’s the end of our tale about a guy named Scott. NO, he really doesn’t exist. But now you can remember the steps Without writing a list. Repeat : (Without writing a list!)
