TRANSITIVE PHRASAL VERBS: These phrasal verbs take object nouns. Most transitive phrasal verbs are separable: Noun objects can go: after the particle (verb + particle + object) orThey tore down the entrance. between the verb and particle (verb + object + particle) They tore the entrance down EXCEPTION: If the direct object is a pronoun, it must go between the verb and particle: The student didn’t know a word, so he looked it up in the dictionary. Note: In a long sentence, a phrasal verb is usually not separated.
