10 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES When you use chronological format: Reasonable/good career continuity Reasonable/good career progression Reasonable/good job stability When employment history is related to/supportive of current job search objective

11 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES When NOT to use chronological format: Poor Career Continuity Little or no career progression Poor record of employment stability Little or no related work experience or career change Frequent or gaps in employment

12 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES Functional: To highlight your skills and accomplishments rather than your work history Lists things you are good at doing at the top of the page and then summarizes the jobs you have held at the end

13 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES When you use Functional format: Little or no employment history Major negative information that could keep you from getting the job Lack of promotion Constant career or employer changes Long periods of unemployment Lack of relevant experience

24 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES Employment History: Respectable positions or positions that are related should be highlighted Only the past 10 years is needed Be honest Do not burn any bridges – EVER! NEVER badmouth a former employer, employee or place of employment

26 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES Format: Being consistent in structure makes it easy for readers to skim through your resume quickly and eliminates confusion A human resources manager or recruiter will take about 10 seconds to look over your resume Strongest Points First - “the primary effect”

27 Font Stay between 10-12 points Your name should be one point higher Be consistent throughout the resume Font Styles: Arial Times New Roman Verdana Book Antiqua

28 Enhancements Use to highlight certain information you want to draw attention to. Bold Italics Underlining CAPITALIZATION Do NOT overuse enhancements otherwise, nothing will stand out!

29 Date and Paper Color Date Use consistent pattern for all dates. Month and Year Paper Color Be conservative; use white, off white or egg shell

30 Spacing 1-1.25 inches all around is acceptable, leave plenty of white space Most resumes should be one page Your resume maybe 2 pages if: Over 10 years of employment You have extensive list of; relevant technical qualifications or credentials

31 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES Other items: Pleasing to the eye Avoid excessive use of “I” DO NOT include a photo, reference contact information, personal information, prior employer contact information or salary history.

32 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES Common Mistakes: Misspellings, typographical or grammatical errors. Disorganized information Poorly formatted (e.g., fonts, tabs, etc.) Paragraphs and sentences Not result oriented Inappropriate information No cover letter

33 CHAPTER 2: RESUMES Tips: Use action words Do not use long sentences Bullet point each point Do not include nonessential information Ensure it is typed and it looks professional!
