1 The Leading EDGETM The Teaching EDGETM
Presented by Jim Stallings Thom Pakurar This session will cover one of the Models for Success, the other being the Stages of Team Development. 1

2 Why is EDGE important? EDGE is a better way of providing training which allows the participants to practice and gain self-confidence through hands-on training experiences. Essentially, it teaches you how to train other Scouts and Scouters. As of January 1st, 2010, EDGE is now required for all scouts working toward their Tenderfoot and Life ranks. This ranges from teaching a square knot as a Tenderfoot to teaching first aid, cooking, or camping as a Star Scout. Jim will present this slide on WHY EDGE is important . 2

3 EDGE We are going to perform a skit which will show EDGE in action. We need the patrol leader from each patrol to come up and help us out. Jim will request a patrol leader from each patrol to come join him at the table. Please watch this demonstration of EDGE in motion. . 3

4 EDGE An event in which scouts utilize a piece of highly honored and respected cloth which has been carefully designed with stars and stripes in the color red, white and blue. A minimum of three scouts are used to form this symbol into a single triangle after performing multiple folds with the corners representing the Executive, Judicial and Legislative branches of our government. 4

6 Now that you have been Enabled to teach this skill please return to your patrol table where you can now guide your partrol thru the process of folding the American Flag. . 6

7 Welcome to EDGE . 7

8 EDGE Explain Demonstrate Guide Enable
A powerful tool for choosing the right leadership or instructional style to be utilized during the stages of team and skill development. Explain Demonstrate Guide Enable In short, we want to match the style of leadership or instruction to the people and situation Jim First, the group started out with an in depth explanation of the skill they were going to be teaching. By itself, that explanation would have been close to useless, but immediately after his explanation, Thom gave us a demonstration of the skill. This helped us because we could visually experience the skill while hearing further explanation. Then Thom gave us the opportunity to practice the skill while he gave us guidance. Having worked through these steps, Thom enabled us to master the sill by ourselves. Explain that you might have to go back… In guiding you may need to demonstrate again In Enable you make need to guide again . 8

9 EDGE The Leading EDGE Acronym which describes the behavior of a leader as the team moves through the stages of team development The Teaching EDGE Acronym which describes the behavior of an instructor as a learner goes through the stages of learning a skill Jim - in EDGE there are two separate parts, the first part is The Leading EDGE which deals with the behavior of a leader as the team moves through the stages of team development. The second part of EDGE is The Teaching EDGE which describes behavior of an instructor as a leader goes thru the stages of learning a skill. Both the Leading and Teaching EDGE will be covered as we progress through our presentation on EDGE. . 9

10 The Leading EDGE Leadership Styles Explain Demonstrate Guide Enable Thom They have already learned Forming, Storming, Norming, and Performing Now we are now going to help show how those relate to EDGE A team responds best to leadership tailored to the stage that the team is experiencing at the moment 10

12 Let us share examples of Team Development
The Leading EDGE Let us share examples of Team Development Forming Storming Norming Performing M M M Leader M M M M Leader M M M M M Leader Leader M M M M M Thom Reach out to the participants for real scouting experiences where they have Explained and how they changed their approach based on their group or participant Demonstrated and what changes they needed to make Guided and if they had to demonstrate again or changed their guidance And Enabled and how it worked based on their demonstration and guiding. Explain Demonstrate Guide Enable 12

13 The Teaching EDGE Team success often depends upon the need for team members to individually or collectively learn new skills The leader is responsible for providing skill instruction, where necessary The leader may serve as instructor or arrange for instruction Jim – go over how the team success often depends upon the need for the team members to individually or collectively learn new skills. If you have anyone in the group that does not care about the skill they can make it harder for everyone else to learn that skill. Some skills are individual while others require a group to accomplish the goal. Explain that the leader is also responsible to providing the skill instruction as needed. You might have some people that already have detailed knowledge of the skill so you can pull them in to help demonstrate and guide the other members in this training. The instructor now is enabling a member of the group as they demonstrate and guide the other members. . 13

14 The Teaching EDGE Style of skill instruction to be utilized by instructor must be matched to learner’s enthusiasm and skill We use The Teaching EDGE to define the instructional style Explain Demonstrate Guide Enable Jim explains that the style of the instructions must be matched to the learners enthusiasm and skill level. This is more than just the age of the leaner but their level of skill in the task being taught. I like to use real life experiences whenever possible. If I have seen or experienced something it is easier for me to express what I am trying to present. When we took my surrogate daughter from the UK went skiing who had never skied in her life. So I put her into a beginners lesson as soon as we arrived on the slope. After an hour of lesson I found her just sitting on the bench. She stated that she did not like skiing and wondered why anyone would want to slide down the same hill over and over again. After lunch she agreed to take another lesson and next thing I knew she was on the slope laughing and skiing. What Changed? The instructor changed and the type if instruction she was receiving changed. She had an instructor that matched her skill level, boosted her enthusiasm which allowed her to succeed. It was all in the Explain, Demonstrate, and Guiding of the instruction which Enabled her to succeed. . 14

15 What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is?
The Teaching EDGE With work, he/she makes advances in learning. Skill level rises as does enthusiasm. Increasing Skill Growing Enthusiasm Norming What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is? Guide Jim will show the first part of the slide and ask the question. Once answered by someone, he will ask what lead them to that answer. Now we display and explain the answer. The instructor needs to Guide . . . Give learner freedom to figure things out on his/her own Support learner with encouragement Help learner move closer to the goal . 15

16 What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is?
The Teaching EDGE As learner works at the skill, he/she may find it difficult and becomes discouraged. Enthusiasm fades. Low Skill Low Enthusiasm Storming What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is? Demonstrate Thom will show the first part of the slide and ask the question. Once answered by someone, he will ask what lead them to that answer. Now we display and explain the answer. Instructor must Demonstrate the new skill . . Show what to do Show how to do it 16

17 What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is?
The Teaching EDGE Continuing on, he/she masters the skill, feels good about the accomplishment, & knows skill well enough to teach others. High Skill High Enthusiasm Performing What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is? Enable Jim will show the first part of the slide and ask the question. Once answered by someone, he will ask what lead them to that answer. Now we display and explain the answer. The instructor needs to Enable . . . Offer learner freedom to make decisions on his/her own and to keep moving ahead Learner can master skill by teaching others . 17

18 The Teaching EDGE Explain Instructor needs to carefully Explain . . .
Learner is excited about the possibilities of utilizing a new skill but does not yet know how to perform the skill. Low Skill High Enthusiasm Forming What do you think the appropriate Teaching EDGE behavior is? Thom will show the first part of the slide and ask the question. Once answered by someone, he will ask what lead them to that answer. Now we display and explain the answer. Explain Instructor needs to carefully Explain . . . What to do How to do it 18

19 The Stages of Skill Development and the Stages of Team Development
The Teaching EDGE The Stages of Skill Development and the Stages of Team Development Learner is excited about the possibilities of utilizing a new skill but does not yet know how to perform the skill. Low Skill High Enthusiasm FORMING As learner works at the skill, he/she may find it difficult and becomes discouraged. Enthusiasm fades. (Most Critical Stage) Low Skill Low Enthusiasm STORMING With work, he/she makes advances in learning. Skill level rises as does enthusiasm. Increasing Skill Growing Enthusiasm NORMING Continuing on, he/she masters the skill, feels good about the accomplishment, & knows skill well enough to teach others. High Skill High Enthusiasm PERFORMING Thom A simple explanation of the chart will suffice 19
