Digital Citizenship Materials from commonsensemedia.org

What do you think you know about internet safety? Ask yourself these questions: ● Does what I do on the internet follow me into the future? ● Can people find information out about me that I don’t even know is out there? ● Is there a way to protect myself on the internet? ● Do you know the difference between face-to-face bullying and cyberbullying? ● How does the internet and media influence stereotypes?

What is a digital footprint??

digital footprint: all of the information online about a person either posted by that person or others, intentionally or unintentionally invisible audience: anyone who can see information about you or posted by you online Key Vocabulary

Everything you do online remains there forever. If you post something online, it can come back to haunt you in the future. Ask yourselves these questions: Have you ever sent a message or posted a comment online? Have you created a profile on a social network site? Have you used some sort of photo-sharing app? Have you ever Googled your own name? Were there any results about you?

People have been looked over for jobs, fired, put in jail for the things they put online. Knowing that the things you do online follow you can help protect you in the future.

Discussing Digital Drama

Ask yourself these questions: ●Do you think people enjoy causing digital drama? Why or why not? ●Did you notice any generalizations about girls in this video? If so, what were they? ●Did you notice any generalizations about boys in this video? ●What do you think about these generalizations? Are they true for you and your friends? Are they true for some, or all, teens?

generalization: an assumption made about a whole group of people based upon your experiences with a few stereotype: a widespread belief about a group of people — often negative — that influences how members of that group are perceived and treated Key Vocabulary

How are stereotypes encouraged by social media and reality TV?

● Were there any generalizations about women in this video? If so, what were they? ● Were there any generalizations about men in this video? If so, what were they? ● Do you think reality TV might lead to stereotypes about girls and boys, women and men?

● What are some of the ways that you and your friends tease each other online for fun? ● When does teasing “cross the line” and become harmful? What are some signs, and what does it feel like to be in that situation? When is teasing crossing a line?

●harassing: bombarding someone with messages over digital media, or repeated contact when it is least expected ●deceiving: using fake names, posing as someone else, or creating a fake profile about someone else ●flaming: saying mean things, usually in ALL CAPS, and often in a public forum with the intention to humiliate ●hate speech: a verbal attack targeting someone because of their race, gender, religion, or sexual orientation Key Vocabulary

When Rumors Escalate...

1. Why did the girls start to harass and threaten Stacey online in the first place? 2. When do you think the girls’ behavior “crossed the line”? 3. Stacey says, “People talk really big, when there’s, like, miles between you.” What do you think she means by this statement? 4. In what ways might the online context make the situation worse than if the bully had harassed Stacey offline? 5. Stacey’s mom says that Stacey should call the school and report the incidents. Stacey responds that it would “just make it worse.” Do you think this is true? Why or why not? After watching the video, answer these questions. If you need to rewatch the video, you may.

● What does it feel like when a teasing situation “crosses the line” from harmless to harmful? ● What are some different forms of cyberbullying? ● What advice would you give to someone who feels cyberbullied?
