3 Why? The Temperance Movement stressed the evils of alcohol during the Progressive Era. Carry Nation and Francis Willard were two reformers who pushed for the ban of alcohol. www.nebraskastudies.org/.../0701_012001.gif

4 The Effects…. The law was difficult to enforce! Bootleggers broke the law and smuggled alcohol for a profit. This lead to an increase in crime and gang activity. Wikimedia commons

5 -The right to vote. Women finally received the right to vote in 1920!

Some women, especially in cities, cut their hair and wore makeup and shorter skirts! They danced the Charleston and were carefree. Flappers dancing the Charleston!

12 The Red Scare A time when Americans feared anarchists or Communists who immigrated to the United States. Wikimedia commons Sacco & Vanzetti were 2 Italian immigrants, and admitted anarchists, who were tried and executed for a crime they claimed they didn’t commit.

14 What’s the big deal? His trial symbolized the conflict between traditional values and actions and modern discoveries and science. Who was he? A high school Biology teacher. What happened? He taught evolution, which was against the law in Tennessee.
