3 Dental Terminology 100 item multiple choice test dealing with selected terms which are common to all dental occupations and others unique to the varied dental specialties Expected to recognize, identify, define, interpret or apply these terms Ex. The ridge that occurs on the occlusal surface of posterior teeth at a point where two triangular ridges meet is the: A. marginal ridge. B. oblique ridge. C. transverse ridge. D. triangular ridge.

4 Medical Spelling Two rounds: Round One will be a written test
The competitors who score in the top 50% will advance to Round Two Round Two will be a "spell-down" where competitors will spell terms. Competitors will be eliminated when a medical term is misspelled. The last remaining competitor in Round Two becomes the first-place winner. Ex. The process of swallowing is A. deglutition. B. dayglutiion. C. deglootition. D. daiglution.

6 Medical Math A written test dealing with selected problems involving conversions between the Fahrenheit and Celsius scales and the metric and household systems of measurement Also involves identification of related symbols and abbreviations, in addition to other complex math functions practiced in health professions Ex. An IV of 500 ml of 5% D/0.9% NaCl is started at The flow rate is 38 drops per minute, and the drop factor is 10 drops per milliliter. At what time (24 hour clock) will this infusion finish? Ex. A patient in a treatment facility for an eating disorder weighs 115 ½ pounds. What is the patient’s weight in kilograms?

7 Medical Reading Requires competitors to apply, analyze, synthesize, and/or evaluate information from the assigned books for the year 50-question, multiple-choice test (10 questions per book) and one (1) tie-breaker essay question. There will be a 60 minute time limit. 8 Knowledge Tests Each "Knowledge Test" will be a 100 item multiple choice written exam with an essay tie-breaker question Each test will be related to a specific career or specialty area from within the health community or related information that applies to several health specialties Competitors will select only one test and each test will be considered a separate event Test Categories: Behavioral Health, Human Growth and Development, Medical Law and Ethics, Pathophysiology, Pharmacology, Nutrition, Transcultural Health Care

Two rounds: Round 1 is a written, multiple-choice test Topics on the round 1 test: biotechnology in health biotechnology industry, equipment, and products proteins and enzymes the competitors who score the highest will advance to round two round two measures performance in selected skills in a written scenario examples of round two skills: identification of laboratory equipment using a microscope preparing a laboratory solution infection control and transmission-based precautions

11 Clinical Nursing two rounds:
round 1 is a written, multiple-choice test some topics on the round 1 test: basic care fluids and nutrition medication management the competitors who score the highest will advance to round two round two measures performance in selected skills in a written scenario examples of round two skills: measuring oxygen saturation applying a nasal cannula or oxygen mask administer medication

22 CERT Skills (Community Emergency Response Team)
Determines participants ability to help the community after a disaster if services are not readily available Teams of two Consists of two rounds Round 1: A written test to test the knowledge of the team in the situation of crisis. 50 questions, score will be the average of the two team members. Top scoring teams will move on to Round 2 Round 2: Timed evaluation of a performance given a certain scenario based on the guidelines for the situation Round two skill are as follows: Treating life threatening conditions, Triage, Head-to-Toe Assessment, Lifts and Carries, and Splinting a Closed Fracture

23 CPR/First Aid Demonstrates competency in first aid and life support
Consists of two rounds Round 1: Written Test (top teams advance) Round 2: Timed evaluation of a performance given a certain scenario based on the guidelines for the situation (same as CERT) Two main skills are needed for Round two: First aid and Basic Life Support (BLS)

24 Emergency Medical Technician
Demonstrates knowledge and skill in emergency medical care Consists of two rounds Round 1: Written Test (top teams advance) Round 2: Timed evaluation of a performance given a certain scenario based on the guidelines for the situation (same as above) Requires skills in: Patient Assessment, Basic Life Support, Trauma, Medical Emergency, Pediatric and Childbirth, Environmental Emergencies, and Special Services

25 Epidemiology Studies the effects of health and disease in populations and provides insights into public health careers 50 multiple-choice question test Based on various sources listed on the HOSA website. Basically requires knowledge in infectious disease emergence, re-emergence, and outbreak

26 Life Support Skills Develop and demonstrate knowledge and skill in basic life support Timed evaluation of a performance given a certain scenario based on the guidelines for the situation There are five skills related to this event: Adult BLS/CPR, Severe Bleeding, Choking, Broken Bone/Sprain and Splinting, Heat-Related Emergency

27 MRC Partnership Initiate or grow a partnership between HOSA and a local Medical Reserve Corps unit A team (2-6 people) will be involved in the community of HOSA and an MRC unit MRC is a network of thousands of volunteers helping to strengthen public health Competitive aspect will include discussion and logging of impact with MRC unit

28 Public Health encourages members to work as a team to teach others in their community about public health initiatives 2-6 people create an “effective, dynamic, and creative” to educate the topic This years topic is Skin Cancer Prevention Competitive aspect is a presentation to judges convincing the efficiency

29 Leadership Events

30 Extemporaneous Health Poster
Assesses ability to analyze and interpret current health and HOSA-related issues through the creation of a poster This event is for all of you young Picassos and for everyone who likes to be creative You are given a 3 hour time period for the actual poster creation After the times limit is exhausted, then the judges will divide into groups and chose 5-10 posters each that they think are the best. However, you cannot have any predrawn drawings, prompts, etc. taken with you to the competition Although 5-10 posters sounds like a lot, keep in mind that there are about 500 or more other people competing in the same thing as you

31 Extemporaneous Writing
Determines your ability to write You are given a mystery prompt to write about with a time limit of 1 hour. Judges will choose only 10 essays that they think are the best. An example essay prompt would be “What is HOSA”

32 Healthy Lifestyle Determines knowledge of healthy living concepts and application of those skills to achieve a personal healthy lifestyle goal This event is divided into two rounds: Round 1 Written, multiple choice test(60 min)(⅓ of total event score) Round 2 four (4) minute interview with judges followed by two (2) minutes to respond to judge’s questions(⅔ of the total event score) Need to explain your personal healthy living goal and show/demonstrate/discuss your progress toward achieving the goal.

33 Interviewing Skills & Job Seeking Skills
Replicates a real life job interview You will need to prepare a cover letter and resume to bring to the conference. At the conference, competitors will complete a job application (at orientation) and participate in a job interview (assigned time received at orientation.) 4-min interview for Interviewing Skills 5-min interview for Job Seeking Skills

34 Medical Photography In this event, you will use digital photography to illustrate the health professions. You will photograph three different health professionals performing an aspect of their job, edit the photos using computer software technology, provide a written description of the career and then may present the three printed pictures to a panel of judges.

35 Prepared Speaking & Speaking Skills
Determines your public speaking ability Given an annual topic: Innovate-Inspire-Ignite You are given 5-min to speak in this event

36 Researched Persuasive Speaking
You select one of the following topics and develop a speech and written paper to reflect the position taken on the selected topic, either for or against, supporting one position or the other. This year’s topics are: Do adolescents have the right to make autonomous medical choices? Should the government have a say in our diets? The method of judging in this event is the general filtering method.Round 1 filter-->Round 2 filter-->Finalists

38 Biomedical Debate This event will consist of two rounds
Biomedical Debate is an opportunity to research the pros and cons of a biomedical issue, and showcase those skills in a debate format. This event will consist of two rounds Round One: written test Round Two: debate round. The topic for both rounds will be announced annually. Teams of 3-4 members will participate in the Round One written test. The teams with the highest average score from the test will qualify for the debate round Topic: The benefits of genetically modified foods outweigh the harm

39 Community Awareness Community Awareness provides opportunities to:
Develop a project to promote community awareness using health and/or safety issues that may be of local, state, and/or national interest. Assist communities to become more aware of the pros and cons of the health and/or safety issue selected. Promote goodwill and public relations for local HOSA chapters. Evaluate the effectiveness and impact of the project on the community Community Awareness is a service project designed to raise community awareness of a health and/or safety related issue of local, state and/or national interest Addresses one specific health and/or safety issue, need or concern and makes a worthwhile contribution to the community Activities are then planned to make the community aware of the health and/or safety issue. A team of 2-4 competitors presents the chapter’s project to a panel of judges in an interview, using the portfolio as documentation of their accomplishments

40 Creative Problem Solving
Encourages HOSA members to analyze the problem solving process and to work as a team to apply their problem solving skills in creating a solution to a hypothetical health or HOSA related problem Two rounds of competition: Round One will consist of a written test to evaluate the team’s understanding of problem solving processes and theories. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two and will be given a potential problem related to HOSA, a health issue or the health community Teams will have 30 minutes to analyze the problem Selected resource materials related to the problem will be provided At the end of the preparation time, teams will have eight (8) minutes to present their solution to a panel of judges

41 Forensic Medicine Forensic Medicine encourages HOSA members to analyze careers in forensic medicine and to work as a team to apply their knowledge and skills in creating a solution to a forensic medicine-related problem. This event will involve two rounds of competition: Round One will consist of a written test to of Event: evaluate the team’s understanding of forensic medicine. The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two and will be given a case study related to forensic medicine. Teams will have six (6) minutes to analyze a case study, which will include written information and may include physical evidence. Finally, teams will be given thirty (30) minutes to write their conclusions.

42 Health Career Display Encourages HOSA members to improve their ability to present themselves and communicate career information to others Teams consisting of two competitors develop a visual display of a specific career or cluster of careers in health First round, judges look at displays and judge 2nd round, the 2 member team will report back to the display at their assigned appointment time to present a 5 minute prepared oral presentation to the judges The students may also be judged on their ability to present themselves and communicate the career information to others.

43 Health Education Health Education encourages HOSA members to work as a team to plan and teach health-related concepts. This event involves a team of 2-4 members who select a health-related concept or instructional objective, then prepare a lesson, provide instruction, and evaluate results The instruction must include the use of presentation tools such as a student-made video, computer demonstration software, or any other form of media Teams will provide instruction to a selected group of learners

44 HOSA Bowl HOSA bowl stimulates and motivates HOSA members to participate in teams and to test their knowledge on various topics and situations in health, HOSA, and parliamentary procedure. Hosa Bowl consists of two rounds: Teams consisting of three-four (3-4) members each will take a written test in Round One Top scoring teams advance to Round Two and compete with other teams by giving responses to items presented by a moderator These items may be in the form of questions, incomplete statements, and/or definitions Winners will be determined by a series of elimination rounds. The last remaining team becomes the first-place winner of a section. Section winners play in final rounds to determine the top three teams

45 Medical Innovation Medical Innovation encourages HOSA members to analyze up-and-coming technologies in health that relate to science, computers, engineering, biotechnology, math, and/or the delivery of healthcare, and to share their understanding with others Teams consisting of 2-4 competitors shall develop a visual display and/or demonstration of an aspect of a medical innovation to be presented to the judges Competitors will be judged on their understanding and insight into the use and value of the medical innovation, as well as their ability to present themselves and communicate the use of a medical innovation

46 Parliamentary Procedure
Develops leadership skills in HOSA members by using parliamentary procedure to conduct a simulated business meeting This event will involve two rounds of competition. Round One will consist of a written test to evaluate the team’s understanding of parliamentary procedure The top scoring teams will advance to Round Two and will be given a secret problem with motions to perform during the meeting The team has twelve minutes preparation time prior to the nine minute demonstration of the meeting All team members must be involved in the meeting.

47 Public Service Announcement
Public Service Announcement encourages HOSA members to analyze the general public’s understanding of a health issue, and to use technology to produce a public service announcement that informs the community about an important health issue. Teams consisting of 3-6 members will produce a 30-second PSA The PSA will promote a health service organization, bring awareness to a health situation, or educate the public at large in regard to health and wellbeing Round One will be the viewing of the PSA by the judges. Selected competitors will give their presentation to a set of judges in Round Two.
