WELCOME TO MS. PAGE & MRS. ANGIE’S VPK CURRICULUM NIGHT
2
THE VPK PROGRAM Our Curriculum The curriculum used in the VPK program is called High/Scope. High/Scope is an active learning approach to Early Childhood Education, which is based on the interest and the needs of children. It is a developmentally appropriate curriculum, which means that regardless of your child’s skill level, the curriculum meets his/her needs. A developmentally appropriate curriculum considers all areas of a child’s social, physical, emotional and intellectual development.
3
THE 5 ESSENTIAL COMPONENTS IN HIGH/SCOPE 1.Active Learning: Which means “hands on”. 2.Key Experiences/Expectations: These are the skills your child will learn. 3.Room Arrangement: This classroom is designed to encourage active learning. You will notice the room is divided into work areas, such as Blocks, Art, Housekeeping, Reading, Writing and computer exploration. 4.Daily Routine: We follow a consistent daily routine that allows for both child and adult choice. This routine is helpful in helping the child feel secure in school. 5.Assessment: We monitor your child’s development and planning for future learning. Report cards and grades are not used in VPK. Instead, periodical assessments are completed by the teacher for each child. Conferences will follow for any concerns or achievements.

HANDWRITING WITHOUT TEARS HWT has analyzed the skills that children need for Kindergarten, and then planned a curriculum that builds those skills developmentally, through play, music, activities, and hands on materials. We use these materials everyday to build those necessary skills.
5
CHILDREN NEED TO: Feel Loved Feel safe and secure Feel Good about themselves Learn to get along with others Practice good health, nutrition, and safety Have consistency in their lives Be engaged in learning through play Be actively involved in their learning For your child to benefit from the VPK program he/she must come to school everyday. Consistency is a key ingredient to teaching young children. Children who come to school every day have the opportunity to achieve the skills necessary to aid them throughout the educational career. We keep a record of the days that your child is absent or tardy. If your child is frequently absent or tardy, the VPK office will be notified for follow-up.
