4 Course Purpose To present a variety of perspectives on leadership that help to inform professional practice and the personal development of the emergency management student.

5 Learning Objectives To review and critique theoretical perspectives of leadership as applied to emergency management To compare and contrast traditional and emerging paradigms To examine the demands and requirements of crisis leadership

6 Learning Objectives (cont.) To apply theoretical perspectives to case situations To understand the emotional intelligence framework and how it contributes to effective leadership. To assess personal characteristics associated with various leadership styles in self and others.

8 Instructional Approach Based on M. David Merrill’s First Principles… effective instruction is problem-based and involves four phases of instruction: 1. Activating existing relevant knowledge 2. Demonstrating the knowledge and skill to the learner 3. Providing opportunity for the learner to apply the new knowledge and skill 4. Providing an opportunity for the learner to integrate this new knowledge and skill into everyday life.
