4 BARGAINING FOR THE SUDETENLAND (537-538) –Where the German people lived in Czechoslovakia was called the Sudetenland Hitler said that Czechs were abusing Sudeten Germans France & Britain said they would protect Sudetenland

5 Hitler meet with French and British Prime Minister and said, it would be his “last territorial demand” The French & British wanted to avoid war so they signed the Munich Agreement in 1938 –Munich Agreement gave Germany the Sudetenland without a single shot being fired

6 Winston Churchill –Churchill said that signing the Munich Agreement was a shameful policy of appeasement, or giving up principles to pacify an aggressor –Churchill said, “Britain and France had to choose between war and dishonor. They chose dishonor. They will have war.” –Churchill was Chamberlin’s political rival in Great Britain

8 Germany took over rest of Czechoslovakia; more than the Sudetenland Then Germany went after Poland

9 THE SOVIET UNION DECLARES NEUTRALITY (539) –Hitler said that Poland was mistreating Germans who were living there –Many thought that Hitler would not attack Poland because Might bring Germany in conflict with Soviet Union France and Great Britain promised military aid to Poland

10 Nonaggression Pact –Stalin (leader of Soviet Union) surprised everyone and signed this pact with Hitler –This pact stated that the Soviets and Germans would never attack each other –But there was a Secret Pact – Germany and Soviet Union secretly divided-up Poland

11 BLITZKRIEG IN POLAND (539-540) –September 1, 1939, German Luftwaffe, or German air force, roared over Poland, raining bombs on military bases, airfields, railroads, and cities –Blitzkrieg – Germany’s military strategy (fast tanks, & more powerful aircraft)

12 After Blitzkrieg on Poland – Britain and France declare war on Germany WORLD WAR II has BEGUN!!!!

13 THE PHONY WAR (540) –Maginot Line – a system of fortification built along France’s eastern border, sat staring into Germany –Siegfried Line – Germans stared back at France –Sitzkrieg – sitting war

14 THE PHONY WAR (CON’T) –Hitler launches surprise invasion on Denmark and Norway to protect their freedom; in truth, he wanted to build bases along the coast to strike at Britain –Hitler turns against Netherlands, Belgium, and Luxembourg –PHONY WAR IS AT END

16 THE FALL OF FRANCE (540) –Italy joins side with Germany and attacks France from the South; and Germany attacks France from the north –Charles de Gaulle – he was French general and fled to England where he set up a government-in-exile –Charles de Gaulle said, “France lost a battle, but France has not lost the war.”

17 THE BATTLE OF BRITAIN (540- 541) –To defeat Britain’s naval power Germany launched an air war. The Luftwaffe began bombing Britain every night for 2 solid months (London) –Britain’s Royal Air Force (RAF) used new technological device (radar) to shoot down German planes – even in the dark
