Types of Forests Old-Growth Forests: An uncut forest or regenerated forest that has not been seriously disturbed by human activities for several hundred years. Second-Growth Forests: Forest after secondary succession. Tree Plantations/Tree Farms: A managed tract with uniformly aged trees of one species that are harvested by clear cutting as soon as they become commercially valuable. http://www.steeleschristmastreefarm.com/Luke_s_Camp_077_800x 600.jpg

Forest Management 2 Major Type Even-Aged Management Same age and size for multiple species of trees in the area. This is called Tree Plantations and Industrial Forestry. Uneven-Aged Management Variety of species, size and ages. The goals are usually biological diversity, long term production of timber, wildlife, and recreation.

Tree Harvesting methods Selective Cutting Shelter Wood Cutting Seed Tree Cutting Clear Cutting Strip Cutting http://concrete-entertainment.com/wp-content/uploads/2010/05/IMG_4183.jpg

What’s Going on with our Forests? Over the past 8,000 years human activity has cut down 20-50% of original forests. Since 1990 we lost 0.5% of forests cover a year. http://www.askgeorgeyeo.com/panic.jpg

Solution! Grow more timber on long rotations Rely more on selective harvesting then strip harvesting. Certify timber grown by sustainable methods Include ecological services of trees and forests in estimating economic value. Reduce road building into uncut forests areas. http://www.georgianc.on.ca/news/wp-content/uploads/2009/01/green- light-bulb4-300x342.jpg
