Nervous System Structure vs Function Hindbrain Upper spinal cord Brain stem Cerebellum

Hindbrain Controls respiration and heart rate Cerebellum (1) –Coordinates movement and is involved in learned rote movements –Balance and posture

Midbrain Brainstem –Heart rate, breathing, eating, and sleeping

Forebrain- Cerebrum (2) Divided into lobes = various functions –Frontal (3) Decision making and problem solving short-term storage sites Motor Area (4) –helps control voluntary movement Broca’s Area (5) –allows thoughts to be transformed into words

Forebrain…cont. Parietal Lobe (6) –Reading and arithmetic Where letters form words, words form thoughts –Processes sensory info When you enjoy a good meal—the taste, aroma, and texture of the food forward parts of these lobes, just behind the motor areas, are the primary sensory areas (7) –temperature, taste, touch, and movement from the rest of the body

Forebrain…cont. Occipital Lobe (8) –process images from the eyes and link that information with images stored in memory. Damage to the occipital lobes can cause blindness

Forebrain…cont. Temporal Lobe (9) –Top Receives info from ears (symphony vs rock music) –Underside Forming and retrieving memories –Other Integrate memories and sensations of taste, sound (language), sight, and touch.

Cerebral Cortex Coating the surface of the cerebrum and the cerebellum is a vital layer of tissue the thickness of a stack of two or three dimes –Most information processing –"gray matter" in the brain- nerves in this area lack myelin insulation

Inner Brain Determine our emotional state, modify our perceptions and responses, and allow us to initiate movements that you make without thinking –Hypothalamus (10) Wakes you up in the morning, gets the adrenaline flowing during a test or job interview, and emotional center –Thalamus (11) major clearinghouse for information going to and from the spinal cord and the cerebrum –Hippocampus (12) Memory index for long-term storage
