2 Principles of Evaluating Achievement The Simultaneous Recognition and Assessment of “What” is Performed and “How” Well it is Demonstrated

3 Evaluation Responsibilities The primary responsibility of all performance judges is to simultaneously consider the content/vocabulary and the demonstration quality of skills/training in a performance context. Every sub-caption on every sheet is influenced by the achievement equation – What + How = Achievement.

4 Evaluation Responsibilities It is critical that judges understand and recognize the scope and depth of the content/vocabulary. It is equally critical that judges have a complete understanding and recognition of the skills, training, and technique involved in demonstrating the content/vocabulary.

5 Evaluation Responsibilities A further consideration is the context in which the content/vocabulary and its demonstration occur. It is also important to realize that performers can only demonstrate their degree of skill and training proficiency when the opportunity is presented.

6 Achievement Considerations HOW: The quality of the performance must be a priority. While you cannot really evaluate performance quality in isolation of the “What,” the quality of the performance must be the center of your focus. These are performance captions after all!

7 Performance Challenges Pure Musical/Visual Demands that challenge the performer individually and within an ensemble: –Technique challenges –Range/Vocabulary challenges –Compositional/Expressive Challenges

8 Performance Challenges Environmental Demands that challenge the individual and ensemble performer: –Spread/Density –Spatial Changes –Changing Listening/Visual Centers –Acoustic Response Challenges

9 Performance Challenges Physical Demands challenging the individual and ensemble performer: –Speed –Visual/Musical Responsibilities moving –Effort Changes

10 Performance Challenges Each of the foregoing components also must be considered though the following degrees: –Level of simultaneous responsibilities – mental and physical –Amount time and number of performers involved in the challenge, exposure or risk

11 Summation The Principal of Achievement is a complex issue for designer, instructor, performer, and judge. –Designers must provide opportunities for content/vocabulary demonstration! –Instructors must be able to train performers for performance recognition and excellence! –Performers must master the training! –Judges must recognize and understand content/vocabulary breadth and depth!

12 Digital Recordings DCI will continue with taped adjudication commentary this year Try to acquire a digital recorder for back- up recordings If you can’t, please submit samples of tapes Have a colleague peer assess your work

13 Process Listen to your own work first In your own commentary and that of others –Find 3 things that you like –Find 3 things that you would improve –Any other suggestions? Tone of voice, amount of talking vs listening etc… Give a general summary and suggestions for next steps
