Some Principles For Training OHP

1. Start from where participants are. Participants bring many types of previous experience to a training event. We need to spend time establishing common ground between participants as a basis for new learning.

2. Facilitate talk between participants It is valuable for participants to exchange experiences and ideas – trainers can facilitate this by structuring talk in training. Talk between participants can assist in developing ideas: interthinking.

3. Provide opportunities for active learning, personal review and reflection. We need to provide opportunities for trainees to be engaged in activities, to do things as well as talk. Reviewing and reflecting on activity enables processing at deeper levels.

4. Help participants to conceptualise where appropriate Participants need to leave training with new ideas and skills to internalise. Trainers need to be ready to contribute to the conceptualising (or theorising) process when participants are ready.

5. Create links with the real world of teaching – classrooms, schools, etc. We need to help participants reconnect with the real worlds they inhabit during training events, to bring ideas back to the everyday world. Activities which link training and the real world are useful in this respect.
