Healthy Further Education Conference The role of Ofsted in promoting ‘being healthy’ Paul Curry HMI 19 January 2010 London

Healthy FE conference 2010 Principles of inspecting ‘being healthy’  ‘Ofsted inspects’ (March 2009) sets out the common evaluation criteria for all inspections where ‘be healthy’ is part of outcomes for children, young people and adults  ‘Common inspection framework for further education and skills’ (July 2009) sets out the evaluation criteria for all learning and skills inspections; A4 ‘Are learners able to make informed choices about their own health and well being?’  ‘Handbook for the inspection of further education and skills from September 2009’ (updated January 2010) sets out on page 48, further guidance on interpreting the evaluative statement above

Healthy FE conference 2010 Providing evidence for health and well being  use of available learner health and well-being data to identify the health needs of all groups, including the most vulnerable  use of learners’ views on the range and quality of health- related services provided  partnership work with external agencies to support delivery and facilitate referral to specialist services  learners’ awareness of the consequences of smoking, alcohol abuse and drugs, insufficient physical exercise and an unhealthy diet

Healthy FE conference 2010 Providing evidence for health and well being  learners’ participation in activities which tackle key aspects of learners’ physical and mental health, well-being and emotional development  learners’ opportunities to access confidential support  learners’ involvement in developing a range of opportunities and activities which are inclusive and have high rates of participation, to increase their levels of physical activity and to improve the uptake of healthy food choices within the provider’s setting.

Healthy FE conference 2010 Grade characteristics: outstanding Systematic use is made of comprehensive health and well being data to formulate and monitor a health and well being strategy which meets the needs of all learners, particularly the most vulnerable. Learners' views are used integrally to inform the strategy and action plan including an evaluation of the range and quality of health services provided. Highly effective partnerships with local agencies enable learners to readily access specialist health services. Very high levels of participation are achieved in health and well being activities; as a consequence learners' attitudes and behaviours are changed significantly towards healthier lifestyles. These are reflected in a significantly improved or very high uptake of healthy food choices, physical activity, sexual health services together with improved emotional resilience of learners.
