6 StopPreviousNext Introduction You can listen to the radio on a computer connected to the Internet. This is called listening to the radio online. You can listen to live radio online. This means you can listen to a radio program that is playing on the radio now. You can also listen to a podcast online. This means you can listen to a radio program that has been recorded. In this workbook you will learn how to:  Listen to the radio online 6

7 StopPreviousNext Equipment To listen to the radio online you will need the following:  A computer connected to the Internet  Speakers or headphones (if you are in a public place)  A media player such as Windows Media Player (it is included in Windows 7) Different websites use different audio icons. You may see a picture of a: speaker radio tower microphone radio headphones music note 7

8 StopPreviousNext ABC Radio ABC Radio is a radio station that you can listen to online. You can find the ABC Radio website on the Internet. Follow these steps. 1. 2. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. 3. Type this web address www.abc.net.au/radio 8

9 StopPreviousNext 4.Press the Enter key on your keyboard. You will see the ABC Radio website. 9

10 StopPreviousNext Listen to a program 1. Move your mouse over an ABC radio program that you would like to listen to. 2. Do 1 click. The web page for this ABC radio program will appear. 3. Move your mouse over the play button next to Listen Live. 4. Do 1 click. 10

11 StopPreviousNext The ABC media player will open in the middle of the screen. The radio program will start to play. 5. To stop the radio program move your mouse over the Stop button on the control panel of the media player. 6. Do 1 click. The radio program will stop. 7. To close the media player move your mouse over the X in the right hand corner. 8. Do 1 click. The media player will close. 11

12 StopPreviousNext SBS Radio SBS Radio is another radio station that you can listen to online. You can search for programs in many languages. You can find the SBS Radio website on the Internet. Follow these steps. 1. 2. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. 3. Type in this web address www.sbs.com.au/radio/ 12

13 StopPreviousNext 4.Press the Enter key on your keyboard. You will see the SBS radio website. 13

14 StopPreviousNext Choose a radio program 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse to the area on the right side of the SBS Radio home page. Move your mouse over the down arrow next to Choose a language. Do 1 click. A list of languages will appear. 4. 5. 6. Use the Scroll bar to move through the list of languages. Move your mouse over the language of your choice. Do 1 click. 14

16 StopPreviousNext Listen to a program 1. 2. Move your mouse over the audio icon. The audio icon can look like this: Do 1 click. The SBS media player will open. 3. 4. 5. Move your mouse over the Play icon. on the control panel. Do 1 click. The radio program will start to play. 16

17 StopPreviousNext You can pause and adjust the volume using the control panel. You may see other Listen to icons like this one 1. Move your mouse over the Listen to icon. 2. Do 1 click. The SBS media player will open. The radio program will start to play. 17

18 StopPreviousNext BBC Radio BBC Radio is another radio station that you can listen to online. You can find the BBC Radio website on the Internet. Follow these steps. 1. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. 2.Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. 3. Type in this web address: www.bbc.co.uk/radio/ 18

19 StopPreviousNext 4.Press the Enter key on your keyboard. You will see the BBC Radio website. 19

20 StopPreviousNext English Programmes On the BBC Radio home page you will see English Programmes. At the bottom of the BBC Radio home page you will see a list of BBC radio stations. 1. Move your mouse over one of the BBC radio stations. 2. Do 1 click. You will see the menu for that radio station. 20

21 StopPreviousNext 3. Move your mouse over the sound icon next to Listen Live. 4. Do 1 click. The BBC media player will open in the middle of the screen. The radio program will start to play. 5. 6. To stop the radio program move your mouse over the Stop button on the control panel. Do 1 click. The radio program will stop. 21

22 StopPreviousNext 7. 8. To close the media player move your mouse over the X in the right hand corner. Do 1 click. The media player will close. 22

23 StopPreviousNext Choose a language On the BBC Radio home page you will also find radio programmes in different Languages. 1. 2. 3. Move your mouse to the area on the right side of the BBC Radio home page. Move your mouse over Languages. Do 1 click. 23

24 StopPreviousNext A list of languages will appear. 4. 5. 6. Choose a language from the list (there are More Languages to choose from). Move your mouse over the language you want to listen to. Do 1 click. 24

25 StopPreviousNext You will see the BBC Radio web page in this language. 25

26 StopPreviousNext Listen to a program 1. 2. 3. Find the radio program you want to listen to (use the scroll bar to move down the web page). To listen to the radio program move the mouse over the audio icon. Do 1 click. The BBC media player will open in the middle of the screen. The radio program will start to play. 26

27 StopPreviousNext 4. 5. To stop the radio program move your mouse over the Stop button on the control panel. Do 1 click. The radio program will stop. 6. 7. To close the media player move your mouse over the X in the right hand corner. Do 1 click. The media player will close. You will see the BBC web page in this language. Use the back tool to go to the BBC Radio home page. 27

28 StopPreviousNext World radio You can listen to radio from around the world in English and in another language. You can search for radio stations on the Google website. Follow these steps. 1. 2. Move your mouse over the address bar showing the current website address. Do 1 click. You will see the current website address surrounded with blue. 3. Type in this web address www.google.com.au 28

29 StopPreviousNext 4.Press the Enter key on your keyboard.. You will see the Google website. 29

30 StopPreviousNext Search for a radio station 1. 2. 3. 4. Move your mouse over the search box. Do 1 click. Type in radio and the country/region or language (or type the name of the radio station if you know it). Press the Enter key. You will see a list of search results. These are radio stations or websites listing radio stations. 30

31 StopPreviousNext 5. 6. Move your mouse over the website you want to see. Do 1 click. You will see the website. 31

32 StopPreviousNext Choose a radio station This website has over 4000 radio stations across Europe. 1. 2. Move your mouse over the country of your choice. Do 1 click. 32

33 StopPreviousNext You will see a list of radio stations for that country. 3. 4. Move your mouse over the radio station you want to listen to. Do 1 click. You will see the website of this radio station. 33

34 StopPreviousNext Listen to the radio 1. 2. Move your mouse over the audio icon that will start the radio program. Do 1 click. You will see the media player in the middle of the screen. The radio will start to play. Remember: there are many radio stations around the world. Each one may be set up differently. Take your time to look at each website. Work out how they are set up and ask your trainer for help.

35 StopPreviousNext Change the volume There are two ways to change the sound volume of the radio.  You can use the control panel on the media player  You can use the volume control at the bottom of the computer screen on the taskbar When you are listening to radio on the Internet in a public place, remember to use headphones so you do not disturb other people. 35

36 StopPreviousNext Change the volume using the media player You can make the sound louder or softer using the slide button on the media player. This is the slide button on Windows Media Player 36

37 StopPreviousNext Change the volume using the taskbar The taskbar is at the bottom of the computer screen. 1. 2. Move your mouse over the speaker icon on the taskbar. This is the volume control. Do 1 click. The speaker will appear. 37

38 StopPreviousNext 3. 4. Do 1 click on the slide button and hold the mouse down. Move your mouse away from you to make the sound louder OR move your mouse towards you to make the sound softer. 5. Let go of the mouse button. To mute the sound, move your mouse towards you until you see ‘0’ on the speaker. 38
