Realistic Fiction O Takes place in the present or recent past O Characters are involved in events that could happen O Settings are or could be real O Characters are real people with real issues solved in a realistic way O The events of the story pose questions that readers could encounter in real life

Science Fiction O Often take place in the future and focus on new science and technology O Must have a base in real scientific principles and often have part true/part fiction science O Focuses on how new discoveries, happenings, and scientific developments will affect us O Settings are often futuristic communities, other worlds, or other dimensions

Fantasy O The plot could never happen in real life O Often involves magic, witchcraft, mythical creatures, talking animals, witches, or sorcerers O Generally has a medieval tone

Historical Fiction O Written to portray a specific time period or historical event at least thirty years in the past O Authors research to make sure the story is accurate and authentic O Fictional characters, settings, and plot events must be portrayed as if they could have happened (much like realistic fiction)
