Statistics 2Z Introduction

Aims to introduce students to some statistical techniques for analysing multivariate data; to demonstrate the importance and usefulness of these techniques in real applications; to equip students to apply these techniques to analyse data from a wide range of disciplines; to train students to communicate the results of their analyses in clear non-technical language; to train students to use computers appropriately for statistical analysis.

Brief Outline of Module Content Multivariate analysis-of-variance Logistic regression Survival data analysis Discrimination Cluster analysis

Practicals – after Easter Week T23 Practical -Project work time (in the lab) T24I*I*STEPS: The birds and the bees (Discrimination) T25J*J*Discrimination T26K*K*Cluster analysis * Workbook entry required

A Minitab Chart Cotinine is a metabolite of nicotine with a half life of about 18 hours

Example of graph + Text box Test of zero slope gives p<0.001, so number of cigs per day has a significant effect on cotinine R squared = 17.2%, so this is a weak relationship
