About the Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute (PASI) Program l The "Pan American Advanced Studies Institutes" (PASI) Program, is a jointly supported initiative between the Department of Energy (DOE), and the National Science Foundation (NSF) l PASIs are short courses involving lecturers of international standing at the advanced graduate and postgraduate level from the Americas l PASIs aim to disseminate advanced scientific and engineering knowledge and stimulate training and cooperation among researchers of the Americas

About CIARA l CIARA is the Center for Internet Augmented Research and Assessment at Florida International University l The center is uniquely designed to leverage technology resources and research activities to benefit FIU and partner institutions: Augmenting the rate of discovery for all investigators Invigorating scholarship for graduate students, undergrads, and students of the community Providing leadership in international networking Developing culturally diverse distributed learning and knowledge creation communities Enabling interdisciplinary research activities mediated through advanced information and communications technologies

How does CIARA work? l CIARA provides leadership linking research, education and outreach with technology driven projects like Internet2, and NSF projects, such as AMPATH, CHEPREO and WHREN-LILA l Universities, working with industry and government, develop and deploy advanced network applications and technologies for research and higher education, accelerating the creation of tomorrow's Internet l CHEPREO is an exemplar of an integrated program of research, cyberinfrastructure development, and education outreach l CHEPREO is an international collaboration with FIU, Caltech, University of Florida, Florida State University, University of Sao Paulo and the State University of Rio de Janeiro l Joint funding by NSF (MPS-0312038) and State of Sao Paulo Research Foundation (FAPESP)

Pan-American Advanced Studies Institute NSF sponsored program to offer a series of lectures at the advanced graduate and postgraduate level involving domain researchers, students and practitioners. Award# 0418366, OISE Americas Program Aims to disseminate advanced scientific and engineering knowledge, stimulate collaborative learning and cooperation among the research communities of the Americas CIARA, along with collaborators from the U.S., Argentina and Brazil, is organizing a PASI to offer a series of lectures on the role of Grid Computing and Advanced Networking for High-Energy Physics and Astronomy Our PASI is scheduled for May 15-20, 2005 in Mendoza, Argentina Approximately 40 students from the Americas will learn of the major experiments, Grid and advanced networking technologies and how the growing interdependence between the science and the technologies are forming global collaborations Mendoza Argentina 7 http://ciara.fiu.edu/pasi/

Goals and Objectives l Understand current issues and challenges involving e-Science collaborations that span beyond national boundaries l Improve our understanding of the role of technology, in particular research networks and Grids, in e-Science l Understand how research faculty, students and practitioners are collaborating in e-Science l Learn from the high-energy physics and astronomy communities about how they use Grids and advanced networking technologies for e-Science l Understand how Grids and advanced networking technologies are being applied for international e- Science collaborations

Methodology l Create an environment that brings together research faculty, students and practitioners l Share knowledge through lectures, focus groups and informal discussions Result will be used to establish a baseline l Document anecdotal information l Collect data from survey forms at the end of the week l Conduct survey at 12 months after the PASI l Assess the types of ties that are formed and sustained as a result of this PASI
