2 Drug Abuse Stories Video Addiction is continued involvement with a substance or activity despite ongoing negative consequences. To be addictive a substance or behavior must have the potential to produce a positive mood change. 4 Commons Symptoms of Addiction Compulsion, or excessive preoccupation with the behavior and an overwhelming need to perform it. Loss of control, or the inability to reliably predict whether any isolated occurrence of the behavior will be healthy or damaging. Negative consequences, such as physical damage, legal trouble, financial problems, academic failure, or family problems caused by the behavior. Denial, or the inability to perceive that the behavior is self- destructive.

3 Alcohol Use and Abuse – Almost half of college students engage in heavy episodic (binge) drinking. Binge Drinking – drinking for the express purpose of becoming intoxicated; five drinks or more at on sitting for men; four drinks or more at one sitting for women. Binge drinking once a week is considered heavy drinking. A Temple University study found that 1 in 4 binge drinkers report having 10 or more drinks in a row. According to the National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism in 2008 some 29,000 young adults between 18 and 24 were hospitalized for alchol overdose, up 25% in a decade. Overdose from combining drugs and alcohol has taken a 76% jump from 1999. Some studies report as many as 1,900 college students die each year because of alcohol- related, unintentional injuries. 10 Signs of Alcoholism
