SEPTEMBER 21 ST AND 22 ND English III

Warm-Up: Journal Entry #7 Think about the last time you read or saw something—an article, a news report, or a documentary—that upset you and moved you to action. What made the message effective? If you wanted to bring about great change in the world, what would you write to spread the word and persuade others to act?

Focus Lesson Review of main idea. Let’s identify main idea in today’s reading!

Mini Lesson Making inferences review What is an inference? Simply, take what you already know and make a guess!

Olaudah Equiano Read “Meet the Writer” on pg. 82 in the Holt Literature books. Question to ponder: Some people believe that it would not matter if Equiano never experienced the Middle Passage himself. Do you agree or disagree? Why?

Work Period As you read The Interesting Narrative of the Life of Olaudah Equiano (pg. 84-89), complete the graphic organizer that helps you to make inferences about an author’s beliefs. Think-pair-share: re-read the first paragraph on page #86. With a partner, determine why Equiano chose to include this anecdote in his narrative. Make inferences about why Equiano believed this incident to be important.

Closing Share what you wrote for the previous question with the class. Be sure to write down your homework from the following slide.

Homework You have been given a number. Answer the question that corresponds to that number using 2 cohesive paragraphs and information from the text to support your answer. 1) What significance does this memoir have for studying slavery and the slave trade? What significance did this memoir have when it was published? What significance does it have now? 2) What was Equiano’s purpose in writing this memoir? Is it a condemnation of slavery, or of the slave trade? Explain your answer.

More Homework Questions 3) How does Equiano describe the “Middle Passage”? What insight does he give into the ways in which Africans perceived Europeans and the ways in which they coped with the brutal conditions of the Middle Passage? What do we learn from this memoir about the experience of slaves in the Americas? Can generalizations be made about the slave experience as depicted by Equiano? Describe the diversity of conditions revealed in the memoir, and suggest factors that may account for this diversity.
