2 Basic Understanding of the ESE Student  Student management for special needs students involves teaching and learning for transportation team members  ESE students learn in different ways.  Establishing rules and consequences are a must with the ESE student

3 Different Levels of the Continuum  Level 0 – No Changes  Level 1 – Accommodations - Support and Reinforcement  Level 2 - Changes to activity  Level 3 – Parallel Participation  Level 4 – Partial Participation  Level 5 – Alternative Activity

4 Let’s Be Proactive  Be “WITH IT”  Request or provide training on specific skills  Ask or provide on the job training for skills  Look to the experts  Collect examples of different interventions  Share and receive information with others

5 Using the Training  Accommodations and Modifications are changes made to help a student learn at their level  The ESE student can fail but there is still expectations and standards  Trial and error  Student frustration level  Independence = confidence

6 Important Communication Skills  Polite verbal responses  Compliments  Introductions  Manners  Greet the student  Be patient  Use the “I” word  Make eye contact

7 Important Skills……..Continued  Avoid interruptions  Body language  Never a “Dumb question”  Listening Skills  Social Skills

8 Important Skills……..Continued  Rules and Guidelines  Organization  Occupy the bus  Attentive

9 Important Skills……..Continued  Bullying  Humor  Emotionally Objective
