PakIstanPakIstan

Forming a new country Pakistan was formed in 1947 to settle the ongoing conflict between Hindus and Muslims in India. When Great Britain gave up colonial control of India, it was the Hindus who ended up with power over the country. With the Hindus in control, the Muslims, the second largest religion in India, were not treated equally and demanded more rights. It was finally agreed that they would be given part of India to create their own country. Originally it was two pieces of land, East and West Pakistan. East Pakistan would later become Bangladesh.

The Taliban and Al Qaida Since being pushed out of Afghanistan, these groups are now trying to take over Pakistan. They mostly live in the mountains areas along the border with Afghanistan away from the big cities. They have more control in these urban areas away from military and police.

Just like in Afghanistan, children are brought into these groups at a young age. Also like Afghanistan, education is the answer to stopping this!

Pakistani Military (These are the men fighting off these groups.)

Economy Approximately 24% of Pakistanis live in poverty. With the Taliban and Al Qaida now trying to control Pakistan’s government like they did in Afghanistan, women are less likely to work in rural areas where these groups exist. They are forced to stay in the home meaning that the only income is what the husband brings home. Usually, this is not enough for an entire family to live on.

However, some parts of Pakistan are modern and beautiful…

East Pakistan becomes Bangladesh In 1971, East Pakistan became its own country, Bangladesh. While East and West Pakistan were part of the same country, West Pakistan had most of the power in government. East Pakistan, however, had a larger population crammed into a smaller piece of land. They felt underrepresented in government and with the distance apart and India between East and West Pakistan, they had no power to change that. So, after many years of bloody conflict, East Pakistan finally broke away and formed its own country, Bangladesh.

What is life like in Bangladesh? Bangladesh is one of the poorest countries in the world. Over 50% of the population earn less than $1 per day and that one wage earner is often the only person in the family who is earning money. Families are large in Bangladesh, usually with 6 to 8 children. That means families with 6 to 8 children often live on $1 per day!

Like India, Pakistan, and Afghanistan, most families in Bangladesh live in poverty. As most of the houses have no running water in rural areas, a major part of life centers around the river. People wash themselves as well as their clothes in the river or the pond. Children also play in these same rivers and ponds.

While most of the country lives in poverty, there are nice parts Bangladesh too!
