ETD Security – Access Restrictions Access to ETDs is by Username/password Student has control over how widely the ETD will be released immediately for access worldwide; campus access only; secure the entire work for one calendar year for patent and/or proprietary purposes; release the entire work for campus access only, while at the same time releasing parts of the work for worldwide access. Parts of the work may also be completely withheld from access Access to ETD administration functions is restricted to a few trusted individuals Once approved the student has no further access to the ETD It is possible to download and edit the ETD but not possible to put an altered version back on the server – the official version is protected

ETD Security – Physical Security ETDs are stored in PDF format ETDs are stored on the Library server under the care of a competent Unix system administrator ETDs are backed up to tape; tapes are stored in a fireproof vault Plans are in the works for remote network backups ETDs will also be archived at the National Library and UMI

Top Ten Reasons for Implementing ETDs 1.Movement to ETD’s is a world-wide trend 2.ETD’s dramatically increase the exposure of UofS graduate scholarship 3.E-format lends itself to incorporation of multimedia elements 4.ETD’s are safe and secure 5.There is a large, well organized academic community (NDLTD) dedicated to promoting ETD’s and developing standards for storing, preserving and disseminating ETDs  NDLTD is a valuable source of advice on best practices

Top Ten Reasons for Implementing ETDs 6.We have built a robust, state-of-the-art system for managing ETDs that is scalable to accept thousands of documents 7.ETDs will save grad students printing and binding costs 8.ETDs will save Grad Studies considerable time and cost in physical handling of bound theses, microfilming, and reporting to UMI, National Library, etc. 9.ETDs will save the Library considerable time, cost and space in cataloguing and shelving bound theses and dissertations 10.We are in a leadership position in Canada

Conclusion The College of Graduate Studies and the Library are committed to the ETD program long term. We are ready to move to full-scale production Let’s do it!
