Lesson 36B – Exodus 11–13 The Passover

Before the Passover What was the state of Israel before the Passover? – In bondage Could they get out of bondage on their own? – They needed a deliverer Was it easy to get the children out of bondage? What did it take? – Death, destruction, suffering, miracles

The Passover http://broadcast.lds.org/visual-resources/old- testament/2011-03-018-the-passover-1000k- eng.mp4 http://broadcast.lds.org/visual-resources/old- testament/2011-03-018-the-passover-1000k- eng.mp4 Write down some of the things you recognize as symbols. – Even if you don’t know what they mean

The Lamb (Ex 12:3-10) without blemish first-born roasted, not boiled completely consumed no broken bones no uncircumcised shall eat it Who is the Lamb?

The Blood of the Lamb (Ex 12:7, 13) On the doorposts, so the destroying angel will “pass over” them Why on the door? – Think of the symbolism of being inside a sanctuary, protected by the sacrifice of Christ at the entrance Were there any Israelites that did not follow these instructions? (Ex 12:28) – Why were they so willing? – Do you know of a future story where they were not so willing? (hint: snakes)

Unleavened Bread What is leaven? Yeast: Eukaryotic micro- organisms classified in the kingdom Fungi Basically mold A spoiling agent The “Bread” should be without impurity. Who is the Bread of Life?

Unleavened Bread What is the longest part of baking bread? – Letting it rise How else should they eat it? (Ex 12:11) – with loins girded – shoes on your feet – staff in your hand In haste – represents the quick exodus

Sacrifice of the First Born In order to save Israel, the first-born sons had to be sacrificed The Israelites did not have to sacrifice the first-born. Why not? Remember Abraham and Isaac. – He also did not have to sacrifice first-born – There was a sheep to take the place of Isaac.

What about today? How do we remember the Passover? Matthew 26:17-20 The Last Supper was a Passover meal. Christ fulfilled the old tradition with a new one.

What about today? What is the new tradition established by Christ at the Last Supper? How is it different than the Passover? The Sacrament is much more direct, This bread and wine represent the body and blood of Christ, which He did sacrifice for all mankind.

Notebook Ideas How does knowing the history of the Old Covenant and Passover and Christ’s fulfilling of the old law help you personalize the sacrament? What offering does Christ ask of you in return?
