2 In the past 1. One of these texts is talking about the past and one about the present. Which is which? How did you know? 2. How do the verbs show if it’s in the past or the present? Le weekend dernier, j’ai visité ma grand-mère et j’ai mangé du pizza. Après, j’ai joué au foot. J’ai porté un t-shirt bleu et un short rouge. Le soir, j’ai nagé à la piscine et j’ai parlé avec mes amis. Normalement le weekend je visite ma grand-mère et je mange du pizza Après, je joue au foot. Je porte un t-shirt bleu et un short rouge. Le soir je nage à la piscine et je parle avec mes amis.

3 Manger (to watch) Finir (to finish) Répondre (to answer) When you look up a verb in the dictionary, it will end in either ER, IR or RE. This means ‘to _______’, e.g. ‘to play’. mangé (watched) Fini (finished) Répondu (answered) The rule for ER verbs is: The rule for RE verbs is: The rule for IR verbs is: VERBS IN THE PAST To talk about the past, you have to change the ending, e.g. to play  played. This is called the PAST PARTICIPLE. Look at the verbs below –how do they change?

4 Subject (who we’re talking about) Have Verb in the past ‘-er’ verbs - Remove r - Add an accent on the last e  é e.g. jouer  joué ‘-ir’ verbs -Remove r e.g. finir  fini - ‘-re’ verbs - Remove re -Add u e.g. vendre  vendu

5 Talking about the past Change the verb in brackets to the past participle. Look at your book for help! Now use your dictionary to look up the verb in brackets in French, then change it to the past. 1.J’ai ____________ (manger) du pizza. 2.J’ai _____________ (mentir) à mes parents. 3.J’ai _____________ (répondre) au professeur. 1.J’ai _____________ (play) au rugby. 2.J’ai _____________ (watch) un film. 3.J’ai _____________ (finish) mes devoirs. 4.J’ai _____________ (choose) un sandwich. 5.J’ai _____________ (wait) au cinéma. 6.J’ai _____________ (sell) la voiture.
