6 Course Description: Chinese IA is a beginning level course for the Mandarin language. This course is designed for students with no previous knowledge of spoken or written Chinese. The course objective is for students to develop listening, speaking, reading and writing skills using both Pinyin system and the Chinese characters. Students will also participate in short conversations, sing Chinese songs, art projects, write notes, dialogues, create and perform skits in Chinese. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to communicate in simple Chinese for everyday conversations on topics studied; students will also be able to talk about Chinese culture and customs.

7 Course Description: Chinese IB class is a continuation of the Mandarin Language for students completed the Level I course. The course objective is for students to continue developing listening, speaking, reading and writing skills using both Pinyin system and the Chinese characters. Students will learn to apply vocabulary and patterns acquired in a linguistically, socially and culturally appropriate manner. Students will also participate in short conversations, sing Chinese songs, art projects, write notes, dialogues, create and perform skits in Chinese. Upon completion of the course, students will be able to communicate in simple Chinese for everyday conversations on topics studied; students will also be able to write notes, dialogues and skits in Chinese.

9 Homework Policy: Students are expected to turn in homework and assignments on time to receive full credit. Absences do not excuse students from turning in the assignments and it is the student's responsibility to complete it by the next day. All homework must be done completely in order to receive full credit. A brief daily dictation will be given at the beginning of each lecture.

10 Final Examination : The final examination will be comprehensive exams covering the lessons taught in the textbook. Academic Honesty: Academic dishonesty is unacceptable and will not be tolerated. If a student commits a dishonest conduct such as cheating or plagiarism, the student will receive a failing grade in the course.

11 Grading Policy : The final grade will be based on the following: a. Class attendance and participation (25%) b. Completion of homework and assignments on time (25%) c. Tests and quizzes (20%) d. Role-play skits/ speaking/other assessments (15%) e. Final exam (15%)

12 Teaching goals: Provide students with open and friendly atmosphere so that they can learn the Mandarin language and benefit from a positive learning experience.
