DO NOW Date: 12/08 The function of the digestive system is to break down the food we eat for nutrients. Brainstorm as many structures of the digestive system as you can.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do the structures of the digestive system work together to process the food you eat? OBJECTIVES: - Review Presentation on the Digestive System -Digestive system notes to record the structures and functions of the digestive system

Digestive System Notes Glue Note Sheet to pg 84

Digestion Presentation Use your sheet to complete notes on the Digestive System. Digestion Prezi

Mechanical vs Chemical Digestion Video

VENN DIAGRAM Draw the following Venn Diagram in your notebook on page 85. Use the following information to fill it in. Mechanical Digestion Chemical Digestion

Mechanical Digestion Mechanical digestion is the physical break down of food into smaller pieces.

Mechanical Digestion EXAMPLE: CHEWING!

Mechanical Digestion EXAMPLE: Peristalsis: The squeezing of muscles in the digestive system which forms a wave that moves food along.

Chemical Digestion Chemical Digestion is the chemical break down of foods into smaller molecules.

Chemical Digestion Example: Enzymes in your saliva and stomach begin breaking up molecules in your food. Stomach acid (Hydrochloric acid) also breaks down fats, proteins, and starch into much simpler molecules as shown in this diagram.

Chemical Digestion **Notice how the large molecule only break apart into smaller pieces. The shapes and colors do not change. They simply detach from one another.

DO NOW Date: 12/09 Give one example of Mechanical Digestion and one example of chemical digestion.

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do the mechanical and chemical digestion work together to break down the food you eat? OBJECTIVES: - Complete Digestive System Lab to demonstrate and understand mechanical and chemical digestion.

Digestion Lab Set-Up A- Lab Clean Up Director B- Beaker Manager C- Lab Director D- Materials Manager

Digestion Lab Materials Managers: 1 Beaker 150 mL of Cola (Phosphoric Acid-H 3 PO 4 )H PO 1 Ziploc bag 5 crackers` 1 filter paper **If you have a gluten allergy, see your teacher for a rice cracker.

Engage: Digestion 1. Put one cracker into your mouth. Hold it in your mouth for 10 seconds. Start recording your observations on your sheet. 2. Start to slowly chew the cracker. 3. Swallow the cracker. Pay attention to the way it feels to have the food travel down your esophagus.

Turn and Talk With your elbow partner: Discuss which forms of digestion (mechanical/chemical) were involved in eating your cracker. Be prepared to describe your thoughts with the class.

VIDEO Digestive System

Digestion Lab – Place 5 crackers into a sealable bag. – Pour in 150 mL of cola into the bag and zip the bag closed. – Observe the crackers. Record any changes ln your sheet. – “Pump” the bag for three minutes. – Observe and record what happens to the crackers inside of the bag. – Place filter paper on top of the beaker. Use the rubber band to keep the filter paper in place. – Using the spoon, slowly pour out the cola and cracker mixture from the bag and into the filter paper.

Exit Ticket Complete the questions on the back of your lab sheet. Glue or tape it in to page 86

DO NOW Date: 12/10 & 12/11 Describe the following as a chemical or mechanical (physical) change? 1)Food being chewed by teeth 2)Food being broken down by the muscles of the stomach 3)Saliva breaking down food during chewing 4)Stomach acid and enzymes breaking down food in the stomach

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How are large molecules broken down during digestion for the body to use? OBJECTIVES: -“Meet Your Food” to understand the large molecules that you eat. - Complete online simulation to understand how large molecules are broken down during digestion for your body to use.

ENGAGE: Why do we eat food? -TURN AND TALK -Be prepared to share

EXPLORE: “Meet Your Food” JIGSAW EXPERT GROUPS: A- Report to Table 2/9 Hamburger Patties (Protein) B- Report to Table 3/8 Hamburger Buns (Carbohydrates) C- Report to Table 4/7 Cheese (Fats) D- Report to Table 5/6 Lettuce and Tomato (vitamins/minerals)

EXPLORE: EXPERT GROUPS: Read the information assigned to your group. Answer the following questions on page 71 in your notebook and prepare to share your information with others. 1)What large molecules are broken down when you eat your assigned food? 2)Where is it digested in the digestive system? 3)What smaller molecules are formed when the large molecule breaks down?

TAPE TO PAGE 87 NUTRIENTLarge Molecule Small Molecule Where it is Digested Lettuce and Tomato (Vitamin and Mineral) Beef Patty (Protein) Cheese (Fats) Bun (Carbohydrates)

EXPLORE: Move back to your table group BUILD YOUR HAMBURGER: -Show your Hamburger Part to your table group -Share the molecules on the back -Place your Hamburger Part in the Center of the table and share your information (LETTUCE< PATTY< CHEESE< BUN)

EXPLAIN: Digestion Online Simulation You will use the online simulation to complete the “Journey Through the Digestive System” Graphic Organizer Voice Level 1 as you work Glue into page 88

ELABORATE: QUESTION: Can ENZYMES and STOMACH ACID really digest large protein molecules into smaller AMINO acids. PROTEIN DIGESTION LAB: -Read the first page carefully -Complete the pre-lab quiz -Put your Protein investigation sheet in your folder for Friday

Digestion Lab Set-Up A- Lab Clean Up Director B- Test Tube Manager C- Lab Director D- Materials Manager

DO NOW Date: 12/7 Complete in your notebook on page You are a doughnut. From the point of view of a doughnut, write a short story about how you would be eaten and digested by a human being. Use the following words in your story: Mouth Enzymes Esophagus Stomach acid Stomach Saliva Small intestine Carbohydrate Large intestine Glucose (sugar) Absorbed

ESSENTIAL QUESTION: How do the structures of the excretory system work to rid your body of waste? OBJECTIVES: -Excretory system notes to record the structures and functions of the excretory system

Reminders Take out your homework and make a pile for the aisle.

Excretory System Tape your notes page into page 89. Use the following slides to to fill in the diagram with information about the structures and function of the excretory system. You will color it when finished.

The Human Excretory System The function of the excretory system is the excrete (get rid of) wastes that are not helpful to the body.

Waste Wastes that are removed include carbon dioxide, water, salt, urea and uric acid. All excreted wastes travel at some time in the blood.

Structures of the Excretory System 1.Skin 2.Lungs 3.Liver 4.Large intestine 5.Urinary System Think – Pair – Share: Can you guess how these structures are a part of the excretory system?

Skin Wastes such as excess water, salt, urea and uric acid are removed from the body in sweat.

Lungs Excess carbon dioxide waste is removed from the body when we exhale. CO 2

Liver The liver is a part of what other system? The digestive system Liver

The liver has many functions, including (but not limited to): 1.to produce substances that break down fats 2.produce urea (the main substance of urine) 3.make certain amino acids (the building blocks of proteins) 4.filter harmful substances from the blood (such as alcohol) 5.The liver is also responsible for producing cholesterol. It produces about 80% of the cholesterol in your body.

The Liver and Waste The liver produces urea and uric acid as a by-product of the breakdown of proteins. Urea and uric acid are sent to the kidneys to be processed. Liver

Large Intestine The large intestine removes solid, undigested food from the body after it passes through the digestive system. Waste is stored in rectum until it is excreted from the body as solid waste.

The urinary system The kidneys filter the blood to form urine, which is excess water, salt, urea and uric acid. Read about the urinary system and fill in the table as you go.

Excretory System EX cretory System EX its the body

Exit Ticket Answer the questions at the end of your notes sheet. Tape into page 90 (if you haven’t already.)
