LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU Polyxeni Arapi Nektarios Moumoutzis Manolis Mylonakis George Stylianakis George Theodorakis {xenia, nektar, manolis, gstylianakis, gtheodorakis}@ced.tuc.gr Laboratory of Distributed Multimedia Information Systems & Applications Department of Electronics & Computer Engineering Technical University of Crete Supporting Personalized Learning Experiences within the LOGOS Cross-Media Learning Platform

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU  Vision of u-learning: provide effective personalized learning services to support learning anywhere, anytime exploiting alternative delivery channels and related devices  LOGOS Project: Knowledge-on-Demand ubiquitous learning platform to bring the u-learning vision into reality ◦ Layered repositories supporting the gradual development of learning experiences ◦ Authoring Studio of tools for learning content creation ◦ Cross-media delivery of learning experiences by special Learning Management System components and publishing services  Pedagogy-driven personalization beyond “one size fits all” solutions (exploited by learners and courseware authors)

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU

 A widely-accepted Digital Library standard  A flexible, but tightly structured container for all metadata necessary to describe, navigate and maintain a digital object (XML): ◦ Descriptive, ◦ Administrative and ◦ Structural metadata  Each type of metadata is described in a separate section, which is linked to its counterparts by internal identifiers  These metadata (any preferred scheme) may be physically stored within the METS file, or in external files referenced from within the METS document

 Personalization becomes a central issue in modern eLearning environments. ◦ Better exploitation of contents residing at repositories ◦ Efficient services to Learners beyond “one size fits all” solutions  Important pedagogical parameters have to be taken into account: ◦ Different Learners have different learning styles, educational levels, previous knowledge, goals.  Clear separation of pedagogy from content is important. ◦ Current elearning standards and specifications (e.g. SCORM, IMS Learning Design) do not support the selection of appropriate learning objects at run-time.

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU

 Described with metadata encoded in LOM  Extend LOM to provide structured representation of Learning Objectives ◦ Verb (Bloom’s Taxonomy) ◦ Topic (from a domain ontology)

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU educational objective http://somehost/bloomstaxonomy.owl explains http://somehost/iconographyontology.owl Iconographic Style

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU  Model for the construction of abstract training scenarios  Represented in an ontology coded in OWL  Pedagogy is separated and independent from content  Reusability of learning designs or parts of them  Can be used for the construction of personalized learning experiences, where appropriate learning objects according to the learner profile are bound to the training scenario at run-time

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU

 Important elements corresponding to ◦ pedagogical parameters encoded in instructional ontology (filtering of training methods/activities) ◦ learning object metadata elements (filtering of learning objects to be bound to activities)  Could be mapped to existing standards such as: ◦ IMS LIP ◦ IEEE PAPI

LADL2007 Workshop, 20 Sep 2007, Budapest, HU

 Architecture of the LOGOS cross-media learning platform: ◦ Multiple layers of repositories managing DOs, LOs and COs ◦ Authoring Studio supporting the creation of multi-platform learning content ◦ Mechanisms for delivering learning experiences in several devices  Dynamic creation of pedagogy-sound personalized learning experiences  Testing of the LOGOS platform with real users (educational content authors and learners) and content  Evaluation of the personalization framework in the context of the experimentation phase of LOGOS project
