IYTE Management Lectures1 Vision, Mission and Values Dr. Berna Bridge İzmir Institute of Technology

IYTE Management Lectures2 Vision zA strategic approach to management requires an explicit sense of direction and purpose. zDefining a clear vision for the organisation is an important stage in this process. zWithout vision, there can be no clear direction, no corporate way forward and no commitment.

IYTE Management Lectures3 Vision zVision is the distinguishing feature of the leadership role. zVision refers to a desirable future state of the organisation.

IYTE Management Lectures4 Vision zIt should be inspirational so that organisational members are motivated to work towards it with pride and enthusiasm. zDefinition: A mental image of a possible and desirable future state of the organisation…as vague as a dream or as precise as a goal or mission statement…a view of a realistic, credible, attractive future for the organisation, a condition that is better in some important ways than what now exists. (Bennis and Nannus, 1985, p.89)

IYTE Management Lectures5 Vision zAn image of what might be, an ideal which is unique to the person or the organisation and recognises dissatisfaction with the present. (Foreman,1998,p.22)

IYTE Management Lectures6 Vision zA vision is a preferred future, a desirable state. (Block,1987,p.103) zVision should be specific to each organisation, not simply a restatement of national values and priorities. zA sort of dream or constellation of goals or scenarios that form in the mind of everyone from time to time.

IYTE Management Lectures7 Vision-Building zThree emerging generalisations for excellent leadership in organisations: zOutstanding leaders have a vision for their organisation. zVision must be communicated in a way which secures commitment among members of the organisation. zCommunication of vision requires communication of meaning.

IYTE Management Lectures8 Guidelines for the generation of vision zThe vision of an organisational leader includes a mental image of a possible and desirable future state of the organisation. zThe vision will embody the leader’s own view of what constitutes excellence.

IYTE Management Lectures9 Guidelines for the generation of vision zThe vision of a leader also includes a mental image of a possible and desirable future state for the broader scene and for society in general. zThe vision of a leader also includes a mental image of a possible and desirable process of change through which a preferred future state will be achieved.

IYTE Management Lectures10 Vision zIn seeking to build vision in organisations, leaders should avoid a ‘top down’ approach, forcing stakeholders to embrace their ideas. zVision should enthuse staff, not make them resentful and unwilling to participate in an imposed process. zThe leader should enroll the interests and aspirations of others.

IYTE Management Lectures11 Mission zMission is another term which is often used to express the purpose of organisations. zIt is used to explain overall aims and philosophy and is often captured in a short sentence or passage.

IYTE Management Lectures12 Mission zIt is usually expected to be memorable and provide a guide to action for members of the organisation. zWhile it is sometimes used interchangeably with ‘vision’, mission is usually regarded as a more specific expression of the values of the institution; a vehicle for translating the inspiration into reality.

IYTE Management Lectures13 Mission zThe starting point is a definition of the organisation’s reason for being. zWhy does it exist? zWhat is its core mission?

IYTE Management Lectures14 Mission zCharacterises the organisation to its community. zProvides a sense of direction and purpose. zServes as a criterion for policy making. zSets the organisational culture. zGenerates consistency of action. zIdentifies clients. zServes to motivate and challenge.

IYTE Management Lectures15 Values zEach organisation has to function within its values. zThe first value is being professional. zBeing professional entails: zDoing the job well zAble to take criticisation positively zUsing time efficiently zOpen to collaboration and team-work zAble to communicate effectively

IYTE Management Lectures16 Values zOther important values are: zTrustworthiness (Honesty, doing what is promised, doing what is right, loyalty) zBeing good citizens (Contribution to community, paying taxes, obeying rules and laws) zCaring( Being kind, thinking about others, helping) zRespectful (Polite, courteous, solve disagreements peacefully) zResponsible (doing what one is supposed to do, eorking hard, trying their best)

IYTE Management Lectures17 Values zFairness (having an open mind, not taking advantage of others, working to change things that are unfair)
