Using Nouns Subject: main noun in sentence The committee named Batman treasurer. Subjective complement: when the subject is renamed later in the sentence. Follows a linking verb. My favorite vegetable is candy corn. Direct object: receives the action of the verb. Fallen leaves covered the path. Appositive: renaming an earlier noun. Offset by commas. Fred, a trusting fellow, never caught on. My brother, Billy Bob, is usually annoying.
