1 Predicate Nominative (noun)/ Adjective

2 Predicate Notes The complete predicate includes all the words in the predicate of a sentence. The simple predicate is the main word or word group in the complete predicate. Example: The young Charles Dickens wrote many articles. The complete predicate – wrote many articles. The simple predicate – wrote

3 Compound Predicate Consists of two or more simple predicates, or verbs, that have the same subject. Many students read and enjoy novels. They may be connected by a correlative or coordinating conjunction

4 Transitive/Intransitive Review
Both have action verbs transitive verb – followed by DO intransitive verb – not followed by DO

5 Predicate Nominative/Adjective
A linking verb connects the subject of a sentence with a noun or an adjective in the predicate. PN or PA A predicate noun (nominative) is a noun or pronoun that follows a linking verb. It renames or identifies the subject. Junana Ortiz was the director. A predicate adjective is an adjective that follows a linking verb. Ms. Ortiz is imaginative. It describes, or modifies, the subject.

6 Common Linking Verbs: Is, am, are, was, were, being, been, become, seem appear look taste feel smell sound grow turn These are linking verbs not action verbs depending on how they are being used in the sentence

7 Examples: Action Verb: Linking Verb: The director sounded the alarm.
The director sounded angry. The first sentence there is a DO because it is an action verb that answers the question what and it is a noun. The second sentence is a PA because answers how the director sounded not what he did.

8 Problems: Some sharks are dangerous.
Most sharks have slits on the sides of their heads. The skeleton of a shark is cartilage. Cartilage feels softer than bone. Hard, tiny scales cover sharkskin. Long ago, people used dried sharkskin for sandpaper. Shark teeth look pointy and sharp. They cut and rip meat. Sharks sense movement. Many sharks are fierce hunters.
