1 THIS IS THE STORY OF ELIE WIESEL By Julia Paull

2  He was born on September 30, 1928 in Sighet, Transylvania which is part of Romania.  He survived the Holocaust which was the killing of European Jews and others by the Nazis during World War II.  After the war he studied journalism in France. In 1956 he immigrated to the United States.  His jobs were being a writer and being a professor at Boston University.  He won the Nobel Peace Prize, the Presidential Medal of Freedom and the Congressional Gold Medal and many other honors for speaking out against violence and hatred.

3 During World War II he was separated from his mom and sisters. His mom and younger sister died and after the war he found out that his two older sisters had survived. Elie went with his dad to a concentration camp. They stayed together but his dad died from starvation and exhaustion right before they were let out of the concentration camp.

4 After the war he taught Hebrew and he would not talk about his time in the holocaust before becoming a professional journalist. This is the Hebrew alphabet.

7  One challenge he faced was shortly after moving to America he was hit by a taxi cab. He was in a wheelchair for a year. He overcame his challenge by thinking about his life and writing a book about his life in the holocaust. He has dedicated his life to making sure no one forgets the Holocaust and all the people who died.
